Whitman says in new book that catering to GOP's far-right wing will hurt party Friday December 17, 2004 By DONNA DE LA CRUZ Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) Former New Jersey Gov. Christie Whitman writes in her upcoming book that if the far-right wing of the Republican Party continues to be a major influence with the GOP, the party will be seriously harmed.

Whitman, who served as Environmental Protection Agency administrator for President Bush from 2001 until May 2003, also says in the book that she was often at odds with the White House on issues such as setting caps on air pollutants, controls on power plant emissions and the debate over global warming. Her tenure was marred by conservatives who felt she was too moderate.

She also writes about some of the issues she faced as New Jersey's governor from 1994 to 2001, particularly the racial profiling of motorists by state police.

But the premise of Whitman's book ``It's My Party Too: The Battle for the Heart of the GOP and the Future of America,'' is on how moderate Republicans must regain control of the party. The right-wing of the party has claimed credit for Bush's re-election.

``A clear and present danger Republicans face today is that the party will now move so far to the right that it ends up alienating centrist voters and marginalizing itself,'' Whitman writes in the book, obtained Friday by The Associated Press. The book is slated to be released by The Penguin Press in late January.

She might be right except the Dems keep doing stupid crap that it don't really matter who's in charge at the GOP.

It's interesting how a party's electoral fortunes are always said to hinge on how closely the party's platform tracks the speaker's preferences.

How would she know?

a) If I'm correct - NJ didn't vote for Bush; and

b) she had no clue as to why he was re-elected.

Move her book to the bargain bin (.99/lb) directly from the loading dock and save some time.

Unfortunately, Christie Whitman considers anyone who isn't a RINO to be hard right. In other words, she's right and 90% of the Republican party is wrong.

The only reason she ever became governor in the first place is a) she's an attractive and plausible woman; and b) her predecessor in the governor's office was a corrupt incompetent who went too far even for the New Jersey voters to stomach.

The far left democrats are doing it to their party, I sure hope that the far righters have enough sense not to do the same thing. Us disgusting moderates need a party too.

You call the last 4 years catering to the right wing?

I think we need to define our terms Miz. Whitman.

She appointed six of the seven judges on the New Jersey Supreme Court that in 2002 came up with the remarkable ruling that the law didn't matter and the Democrats were sure OK, pretty please, to substitute Lautenburg for Torricelli on the Senate ballot. Then she complained about the decision! She was a spendthrift who probably finished the Republican Party in the State for the next 20 years.

You may see her as attractive now, but before she was governor she coud eat corn on the cob through a chain link fence.
The b) part of your post was on the money though.

Catering to extremist is always a bad idea. On either side of the aisle.

The anti-GOP folks always attack the 'right-wing' or here 'far right wing', but they never one, identify who these people are or two, what these unacceptable policies are. No substance.

Doubt it. She's been wrong on everything else. The GOP would probably benefit from kicking idiots like her out of the party.

How right (no pun intended) you are! This administration - in my opinion - has always been a RINO administration and is becoming even more so.

"before she was governor she coud eat corn on the cob through a chain link fence"

now THERE's a mental image for you. ROFLOL!

Unfortunately her RINO-pandering to the Left now that she wants to sell her consulting services is a lot less funny....

The only problem with this is that anyone to the right of Whitman, including Ted Kennedy, is the far right wing.
