Defeating Global Warming - the Essential thread
Various | Various | DaveLoneRanger

Posted on 12/19/2004 8:20:27 PM PST by DaveLoneRanger

The following is the result of a biology class in human ecology that I took this past semester (Fall 2004) as a freshman in college. The assignment was to gather ten articles and write some commentaries about them, challenging the ideas, presenting alternative ideas, or offering original thoughts. It was entirely my idea to make the journal focus primarily on global warming, particularly as a result of the bio teacher, and how greenie “we’re killing the earth” type stuff she was believing in. (She wasn’t necessarily a sniveling liberal, or a fringe kook, I believe she sincerely believed what she taught, but the poor lady needed some antidepressants)

Like I said, the goal was to have ten articles. I began delving into the assignment, and the end result was approximately thirty-six articles, most of them relating to global warming. Some were not, and some were pro-global warming sites that I offered mild, amateur criticism of which probably isn’t good enough to use.

I mentioned this project to a few Freepers who were interested in it, so I took the time to put this together into a Freep-worthy format. The idea is for it to be the ultimate arsenal of anti-global warming/environmentalist wackos/greenie kooks who think we’re raping mother earth because we drive a Suburban. Please feel free to add to this, and hopefully both now and long after my children’s children are dead, people will look for global warming research (or perhaps global cooling will be the thing by then) and Freepers will give them this page and tell them that all they ever need was compiled by wise old Dave, who went on to be a Senator, Lawyer, and successful talk radio host before he died.

Note: Many of these articles were researched and printed out from campus computers, and so the only link I can find is the URL listed at the bottom of the page, which may or may not be complete. Most of them are, some of them are not, and some of them appear to be complete, but could be missing some end letters. If the link does not work for you, the information I give on the page should be enough to locate the article through Google or Yahoo.

“Earth’s Fidgeting Climate - Is human activity warming the earth, or do recent signs of climate change signal natural variation?” http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2000/ast20oct_1.htm

“Global Warming Bombshell” http://www.technologyreview.com/articles/04/10/wo_muller101504.asp?p=0 (The above article appeared already on Free Republic, and I’m copying the date from the page I printed it out on, so the URL might perhaps be incomplete)

“Ice Shelf breakup challenges researchers” http://www.usatoday.com/weather/resources/coldscience/2004-05-26-peninsula-conf_x.htm

(This article was somewhat pro-global warming, so I offer my commentary for balance:

The Global climate change theory states that the world is slowly warming up. The result of warming up would be growing warmth in the oceans. This would cause more evaporation, causing more precipitation, even in arctic areas. If the ice shelf is growing thin enough to break up, does this not mean that it is not receiving enough continuous precipitation to build itself up slowly as it has been for decades and centuries? Could not the affect of warmer water be cancelled out by precipitation?

The article indicates that the ice shelf break-off and renewal process has been going on for at least a hundred years.

I’m glad this article brings up the subject of how far back the temperature measurements (an indicator of whether or not global climate change could in fact be an extremely long-term warming/cooling trend) go. And it doesn’t hold too well, regardless of how warm it was in December 2001.

The article states that computer models do not find a pattern of warming in the Antarctic Peninsula. But computer models are obviously not the most reliable in the world, in light of the “J-curve” evidence being disproved.)

“Ozone Hole ‘Set to Shrink’” http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/1050495.stm

“Oil Drilling in Alaska” Sarah Anderson, LibertyHaven.com (not particularly relating to global warming, but it is related to oil drilling in Alaska)

“Glaciers Shrink, But Some Resist Global Warming” http://www.planetark.com/avantgo/dailynewsstory.cfm?newsid=26729 I remembered Rush talking about this article, absurdly presenting global warming as fact by attesting to the fact that some glaciers were NOT melting, and happily dug it up for my teacher.

“The Global Warming Scandal - The Kyoto protocol is a “brown plague”, according to Russian president’s adviser” (Previously posted on Free Republic) http://www.inauka.ru/english/article48881.html

“Global Warming: Not an Immediate Problem”

J. David Bethel, LibertyHaven.com

“Kyoto Crashing” Wall Street Journal editorial 10/28/03 - link on page is incomplete because it’s so long, but articles like that are generally removed from archives after a while. It’s possible that someone has already posted this on Freep, and you’re welcome to check, or search for it on the web. (Since I found it in November of this year, perhaps it’s still available: google the words “Kyoto Crashing”)

“Job Advocacy Group Applauds DNC Kyoto Rejection” http://www.kron4.com/global/story.asp?s=2064509&clienttype=printable

“Scientists Warn Kyoto Will Barely touch Global Warming” http://news.scotsman.com/international.cfm?id=1167022004

“New Energy Bill Would Enact Kyoto Protocol” http://www.cato.org/dailys/05-28-02.html (This article is two years old, but talks about the fundamental flaws behind Kyoto)

“Car Exhaust Slows Global Warming” http://www.anova.com/news/story/sm_524431.html?menu=news.scienceanddiscovery (Potentially a partial link, it’s hard to tell from the page -- this one will REALLY FRY environmentalist kooks……the best solution for global warming is to rev up your SUV!)

There is more to come later, and forgive me for not having time to format the HTML - links should automatically show up.

Also check out junkscience.com, there's a lot to counteract liberal panic spin there.

LOL

This B/S seems to adapt to the whims of these "educators".

Seems like every 10 years, or so it's warming, then for the next 10 it's cooling.

They had me going for a while, then I matured and I simply dress for the weather. ;)

The left's commitment to global warming with no evidence rivals the right wing creationists commitment to special creation with no evidence.

Before we can defeat bad science, we must rid ourselves of it.

First of all, there are more right wing creationists than those that believe otherwise.

Second, we don't need evidence for special creation.
"We do not know how the Creator created, what processes He used, for He used processes which are not now operating anywhere in the natural universe. This is why we refer to creation as special creation. We cannot discover by scientific investigations anything about the creative processes used by the Creator."
Duane Gish, Evolution? The Fossils Say No!

Finally, the argument that the right needs to decommit itself from special creation to rid itself from bad science is just popostrous. Unlike global warming, creationism does not affect our procedure or the implentation of policy.

Sorry, science is not a vote. Science is based on evidence, data, analysis, inference and peer review.

"Second, we don't need evidence for special creation.
"We do not know how the Creator created, what processes He used, for He used processes which are not now operating anywhere in the natural universe. This is why we refer to creation as special creation. We cannot discover by scientific investigations anything about the creative processes used by the Creator." "

Exactly, and that is why this peculiar belief is a religious cult and not science.

"Duane Gish, Evolution? The Fossils Say No!"

Gish doesn't have a clue what the fossils say. He is a charlatan. He has been discredited in public time after time.

"Finally, the argument that the right needs to decommit itself from special creation to rid itself from bad science is just popostrous. Unlike global warming, creationism does not affect our procedure or the implentation of policy."

Sure it does.

Sorry folks, I don’t know why the last one didn’t auto-HTML, and as a result, some of the other articles I researched will have to wait so I can properly format this. (I only did about a third of the articles I have, listed above, but did more)

“Earth’s Fidgeting Climate - Is human activity warming the earth, or do recent signs of climate change signal natural variation?”

“Global Warming Bombshell”

“Ice Shelf breakup challenges researchers”

“Ozone Hole ‘Set to Shrink’”

“Glaciers Shrink, But Some Resist Global Warming”

“The Global Warming Scandal - The Kyoto protocol is a “brown plague”, according to Russian president’s adviser”

“Global Warming: Not an Immediate Problem”

“Job Advocacy Group Applauds DNC Kyoto Rejection”

“Scientists Warn Kyoto Will Barely touch Global Warming”

“New Energy Bill Would Enact Kyoto Protocol”

“Car Exhaust Slows Global Warming”(Potentially a partial link, it’s hard to tell from the page -- this one will REALLY FRY environmentalist kooks……the best solution for global warming is to rev up your SUV!)

“2004 Summer 16th Coolest on Record”

Arctic sea ice not melting: new research

Study links tree rings to global warming

This one is pro-global warming, and those deserve my commentary, meager as it might be.

Another article addressing the idea of tree rings and the historical record that I found interesting. And once again, an inherent and underlying bias is clearly present. A clear pattern of excess warmth and heat in periods dating back as early as 900 A.D. (do we have trees that old??) is seen when examining the tree rings. And somehow, this automatically leads to global warming in modern times? Global climate change may be occurring, but if it also occurred in the Middle-Ages, then a clear link between modern technological advance and global warming falls apart. Yet the article not only assumes global warming exists (which not all scientists agree is the case), but also explains exactly what, among human behaviors, causes it. Although the study plainly shows that a “global warming” took place in 1200 A.D. when human advancement was the wheel, somehow the author assumes that another recurring warm cycle is caused this time by human technology. And when the article states that the study’s authors do not draw a link between the warming then, climate change now, and human activity, the article still creates that link. It seems that most pieces refuting the idea of global climate change on a large and drastic scale are opinion pieces, and objective articles support global warming. Since there ARE two sides to the issue, it should be the responsibility of media and everyone else to give both sides a fair hearing.

Forest Response to Global Warming (I believe the source of this material, www.co2science.org, offers some good material)

Cold Hard Facts (On Global Warming)

Hope the formatting works. I'll be back tomorrow with the rest of them if I can, and also to respond to the posts about evolution. It's a special interest of mine, and I think I can offer unique (yet scientific) opinion on the subject.

I'll try to visit most of these links to make sure they work, but any and all help you all can provide towards any that may not work would be much appreciated.

Some more global warming info that I've been catching with a net for a few weeks.

An article in the New York Times on reports that Eskimos have their mukluks in a wad (paraphrased) because of global warming. “Eskimos Seek to Recast Global Warming as a Rights Issue” the article headlines. The December 15th article states” The Eskimos, or Inuit, about 155,000 seal-hunting peoples scattered around the Arctic, plan to seek a ruling from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights that the United States, by contributing substantially to global warming, is threatening their existence.” Next they will probably sue America for their part in global warming…naturally ignoring China and Russia, like everyone else. http://www.ran.org/news/newsitem.php?id=1256&area=home

Meanwhile, on the issue of Kyoto, the Christian Science Monitor has a headline asking if “Kyoto is Kaput” at this link: http://www.csmonitor.com/2004/1220/p08s01-comv.html, further showing that Kyoto won’t solve the mythological problem of global warming.

And the AP ran a piece on December 10th which drew the attention of Rush Limbaugh. The headline read “Women more at risk from climate change.” How so? Why, because they can’t swim.

“For instance, often women don't know how to swim, so in a flood situation that can lead to a higher instance of death or injury," Angie Daze, a program manager with a Canadian group called Reducing Vulnerability to Climate Change, said. If only more Sri Lanka women had been able to swim, they would have been able to escape the tsunami disaster! (Which, as you’ll recall, was caused by an earthquake, not global warming.)

“Women are highly dependent on the environment for their family responsibilities" in developing countries, said one environmental worker based in Bangladesh. "Any type of environmental degradation impacts them more severely than men."

So not only does the article condescend towards women, painting them as the weaker gender, but also claims that they are at greater risk because, beware lest your falling jaws injure your chest, they are more domestic! Don’t believe it? http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/World/2004/12/06/768551-cp.html

And thanks to Beavus for this catch:

"Winds, ice motion root cause of decline in sea ice, not warmer temperatures" - University of Washington
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1310645/posts

I have my ecology textbook, and although it gives some voice to Global Warming critics, it continues as though they don't exist and what they say doesn't matter; or that they never said it. I'm going to research the names they give as legitimate critics and see what I come up with.

FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA, APRIL 21, 1998---More than 15,000 scientists, [8/4/98: now about 17,000] two-thirds with advanced academic degrees, have now signed a Petition against the climate accord concluded in Kyoto (Japan) in December 1997. The Petition (see text below) urges the US government to reject the Accord, which would force drastic cuts in energy use on the United States. This is in line with the Senate Resolution, approved by a 95-to-0 vote last July, which turns down any international agreement that damages the economy of the United States while exempting most of the world's nations, including such major emerging economic powers as China, India, and Brazil.

Increased carbon dioxide has, however, markedly increased plant growth rates. Predictions of harmful climatic effects due to future increases in minor greenhouse gases like CO2 are in error and do not conform to current experimental knowledge.

Global Warming Activists Call for Sierra Club Official in Maryland to Step Down:

"(CNSNews.com) - Environmental advocates in Maryland have called for the immediate resignation of one of the Sierra Club's most powerful officials in the state over his "blatant suppression of scientific data" that might show a wind farm poses no threat to migratory bird populations.

In a statement released on Monday, Mike Tidwell, director of the Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN), accused Dan Boone, conservation chair of the Maryland Sierra Club, of repeatedly refusing to release the results of a study conducted in Garrett County by a team of noted ornithology experts Boone picked himself."

"Global Warming is questionable. ... Are things warmer than they were a few years ago? Yes. But... WHY? That's the real question. There is also global warming on Mars, Jupiter, and Titan. Did SUV's cause that as well? Are Martians using fossil fuels? Or are we looking at a solar event over which we have zero control? I personally think we're looking at a normal solar cycle. Things warm up and cool down when you look at the long term climate history. We STILL aren't anywhere near as warm as we were during the Medieval Warm Period!" -- "Reese," aka "Mamapajamas"
See: "This technique has enabled scientists to accurately measure temperatures in the Atlantic and northern Europe going back thousands of years and the results make nonsense of the global warming scare. ... The sea temperature calculations prove that between 600AD and 1100AD temperatures were about 2°F higher than they are now. During this period, northern Europe experienced a golden age for agriculture. Greenland, now a frozen wasteland, was then a habitable Viking colony and there were vineyards in the south of England." HERE. How did Greenland get its name anyway? Do you think it was just one more ironic joke by those humorous, sophisticated Vikings?  Hmm?
