They have NO one except maybe Joe Lieberman. Other than that and barring any unforseen circumstances and the way this Christmas (or lack thereof) went this year they will NEVER win the south!

So much for the long-discredited idea that the South lost the Civil War!

Yep. They are closed up tighter than Dick's hatband. Whoever Dick is. It's a southern saying. They are scarcer(?) than canned onion rings at a green bean casserole cookoff. They are as unwanted as Helen Thomas at a single's dance.

Basically, they're DONE.

Uh, yeah. That must explain the Jefferson Davis presidency after he declared the war over and took office... I really like that memorial of him in Washington not far from the Washington one...

Let's not get crazy, folks.

The area we live in- between Jacksonville & Savannah- was about 80% Democrat until Ronald Reagan came along.

Back then, I cannot recall a single office holder from here who was a Republican- you simply could not win office with an R before your name.

The great irony in that was that conservative, Southern Democrats were probably farther to the right than most current, "moderate" Republicans. Strong supporters of the military, free speech, gun rights. Big on "family values." Think of Zell Miller, and you will have some idea of what they were like.

"We are out of business in the South," said J.W. Brannen, the Democratic Party chairman in Russell County, Ala

Don't feel too bad, J.W. Look at the corrupt Dem./socialist inner cities of the nation, like Philly, NYC, Detroit, etc., etc., etc.

Put some ice on it down there ........ if it hurts so bad.

It's not just the south...the Dems have just as little chance in most of the west as well.

LOL! Who knows what attracts someone to canned green beans, canned soup, and canned onion rings. I fear canned lettuce cannot be far off in our future.

Heck, the Dems couldn't even win most of the counties in NYS. The only truly blue state in the nation was MA. The Dems have had it for the foreseeable future.

Or they can use "re-framing" to put up another liberal dressed in conservative clothing.

Telling lies comes easier than finding a conservative Dems could nominate.

As scarce as decency in The Queen of Darkness.

It never ceases to amaze me how many Republicans have this "love" fest going with Lieberman. How soon we forget!! As Algore's running mate, Lieberman was quick to push ALL of his previously held principles aside and was vocal in restating his beliefs. Ultra libeatl beliefs. Have we forgotten???

"The generation-long political retreat of Democrats across the South is disintegrating into a rout."

This is news?

That is the most either party has controlled in the region since Democrats also won 22 in 1964 -- the election in which the white backlash against the Civil Rights Act allowed the GOP to make its first inroads into the South.

They dance around Vietnam and the leftist radical takeover of the Democrat Party which drove the South into the Republican party. The CRA passed in 1964 and the Democrats swept the congressional elections. They always cite the the Civil Rights Act, but the fact is more Republicans supported it than Democrats. Civil Rights is not what drove the South to the Republicans. It was in 1972 that the South switched, and it was the Democrats anti-military stance on the Vietnam War that caused the switch.

Do not be so sure. Florida could tip with just a little more of the noxious combination of immigration and emigration.

Virginia is in a similar flex point and might turn in a cycle or two for the same reasons.

While not part of the old South, New Mexico and to a lesser degree AZ and Nev. are also vulnerable.

If we lose Florida, the Bush coalition becomes transformed. What once was an impregnable citadel from which to sally forth to poach the odd blue state, now becomes a bunker where we ultimately become reduced to relying on the filibuster to avert catastrophe.

To avoid this we must stop uncontrolled immigration or your precious (ok, our precious) South will be gone with the wind. We must stop Hispanic immigration while at the same time keeping at least 40% of its vote in national elections. Even Slick Willie would have difficulty with that straddle. But there is a good chance Hispanics will accept that rational controls on immigration are in their own interests.
