Holiday Music Ban Divides NJ Town Caroling Protest Held Tuesday Evening Dec 21, 2004 6:14 pm US/Eastern
School Christmas caroling and the legal right to do it is once again a hot issue in one New Jersey town. Now a visiting politician is making a statement protesting a school policy which he believes hits a sour note.
The caroling protest lasted only a half-hour on Tuesday evening. The group shut down Parker Avenue in Maplewood, NJ. They didnt get through their prepared song list but this outing was about more than spreading holiday cheer.
If timing is everything, then Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan a Republican with Gubernatorial aspirations says hes anxious to seize the moment.
Were going to actually conduct a subversive activity. Were going to sing Christmas carols and Hanukah music, says Steve Lonegan, Bogota Mayor.
Maplewood/South Orange school district officials say theyve banned organized, religious holiday caroling for the last decade and every year it mushrooms into a contentious issue for parents and politicians.

if you protest christmas you are a flaming idiot... end of discussion. this country is far too wacky for my tastes. even the socialist european trash don't do crap like this.
The whole world is going nuts.
And yet, this school will still be closed for Christmas Eve this year. Shouldn't they throw the doors open, on that day, Thanksgiving, and any number of other holidays, plus Sundays?
My wife and I lived in Maplewood for a year (back in 98-99), and I knew nothing about a caroling ban. It's a nice bedroom community - has a very New Englandish feel about it. But very yuppie ... I can imagine there's plenty of tight sphinters in that town.
Correct, like Montclair, it is filled with ex-Manhattanites. The schools are filled with Newarkites and East Orangeites, however.
These type of people are really ruining this country.
The misanthropy that lies at is the heart of progressivism expresses itself most vividly in the war against Christmas.

It's my impression that Maplewood is attracting a lot of gays, as well. I remember that when they started issuing "domestic partnerships" in NJ, Maplewood was the place where Channels 4 and 7 sent their news crews, and they had pictures of a long line at city hall.
Makes sense if the town is nice but the schools aren't.
Paul and Silas .......SANG......even at midnight!
Its about.......JOY!
Merry Christmas!@
Correct. Maplewood had its first gay pride day a few months back. It tends to attract Gays and DINKS (double income no kids) types who want more space than they had in Manhattan or Brooklyn, but don't really care about the schools.
IIRC the Pope was complaining about this happening in Italy just last week.
What is it with public officials in New Jersey??? Is it necessary to have your brain removed before you run for office??!!
If you knew anything about NJ you wouldn't be asking such a silly question.
Charles Krauthammer described the stupidity of these insensitive anti-Christian Scrooges very well last week.
Christians need a Christian defense league like the Jews (CDL)...and an (ADL) anti Christian defamation league....And a Christian ACLU would help as well since the one we have is partial to one religion and against Christians, the Boy Scouts, and the military.
This is how hate starts.
To that, I say AMEN!
Born in East Orange, mentioned in a Bob Dylan song--and grew up in Newark, a Puritan settlement, the third-oldest large city in the country, birthplace of Percy Bysse Shelley's grandfather.
There is a Christian Defense League...it's called the ADF and here's their website www.telladf.org
Bump
Well if there is, it must be run by a bunch of catatonics. Christians are under attack in this country...if you or they haven't noticed.
