A little biride familiar with discussions at CBS News tells me that the network suits will announced Dan Rather's replacement the day they release the report about the faked memos.
I guess the aim is to distract from the bad news by creating two headlines instead og just one.
It's called Karma.
It will serve to illustrate that the two are linked.

Is this Katie Couric from some 2oth century TeeVee shows? I heard about her in journalism school, I think. I didn't know there is still some interest in the old Big Media Industry
I can't see Katie turning into a news-reader.
On her morning gig, she gets the chance for live interviews. Those give her the opportunity to ask her infamous editorialized questions.
On a 30-minute news broadcast, she would only occasionally have that opportunity to do interviews.
I just can't picture her accepting such a confining position, unless CBS gave her editoral control or some such additional power.
My thoughts exactly. This seems a stupid move on somebody's part-- or a brilliant one, depending on who's making the decisions.
I can't believe they would name her as Rather's replacement. Outside of Carville, I can't think of anybody that I would NEVER EVER watch to report the news if this was the only news I could get. I might have checked on election night when flicking through the channels to see how Dan looked and how he was spinning; Katie - NEVER because I know what she would look like and how she would be unable to hide how bitter and bent-out-of-shape she would be. This has to be a joke or a suicidal call for help from CBS.
Katie Couric???? I thought she died of bowel cancer. By the way--Yassar Arafat is dead, and she cried.

The only difference is Blather could (and would) lie with a straight face and Perky katie lets her bitterness with conservatives and her worshipping of the anti Americans shine through. She cries when we capture or kill terrorists or Palestinians die and smirks when she can report an anti Bush story. It's the only difference.

I guess I should read all of the replies, then comment. (I made basically the same comment in the previous post.) She is so transparent.

I don't think this plan to release both the report and the new talking head's name at the same time is an attempt to split attention... rather, it is an attempt to show that the CBS suits "fired" Rather without actually saying "you're fired!".
I also wager that the report shows that when confronted with no one willing to verify the authenticity of the papers, Rather overruled with something just like he said later on, '[possibly] Fake, but true'.
Yassir has lately been reported to be NOT undead, but it could change for the better in the past.

I was hoping that they would put Rather out period and give him the opportunity to stay at home raising horses or something. I don't even want him cleaning windows for any news station.
