With Ohio inching toward a final recount that trimmed a few hundred votes from President Bush's six-figure margin, elections officials said electronic voting systems worked as promised. But critics were unconvinced.

With recount results reported in 86 of 88 counties Tuesday, President Bush picked up 438 votes and Sen. John Kerry gained 680, narrowing Bush's 119,000-vote lead by 242 votes, according to an Associated Press survey.

But critics were unconvinced

F' 'em. Nothing will convince them. Enough is enough.

Who's driving this recount thing? Even the Kerry campaign wasn't interested.

The third party candidates -- Badnarik and Cobb -- were officially behind it, but Kerry intervened in a court case to ensure that all 88 counties participated in the recount.

I've been beaten to the punch repeatedly on FR, so I sympathize.

When are these critics going to make good on their promise to move to Canada? I'm tired of their babbling. They ought to move somewhere where the healthcare is free and the drugs are cheap.

To be fair, I agree with the Kerry camp on this -- either count them all, or none of them. Doing it piecemeal gives us FL 2000 or WA 2004 scenarios.

Oh, I'm so glad that money was spent on this. It really made a difference! (And, don't the Dems have to pay for this recount because it didn't change the outcome?)

How many illegal votes have they found?

If they can pick up 242 votes with every recount, find some absentee ballots that weren't counted (like in Washington state) they can turn this into a Kerry victory in only another 490 recounts.

The sad part is, they could find 200,000 Ohio votes for Kerry and it doesn't matter. It is too late. The official electoral votes have been cast. All that is left is for the Senate and House to count those votes. There is no process for replacing Ohio's votes now.

Naw! Now they are saying that the recounts are rigged. Next they will be wanting recounts of the recounts.

Well, at least he didn't want to cherrypick counties like Gore did.

Talk about a waste of taxpayer money... I hope Ohio has a law that tells the person who conducts the recount, must pay for the whole thing..

They are not giving up yet! This is just more evidence of how big this conspiracy really is. They are so desperate over there they are talking about contacting Ohio's favorite son, Jerry Springer, to get the word out.

I agree with the principle that a recount should be a statewide affair. But no recount was needed in Ohio. Pennsylvania would have been a better choice. Philadelphia is probably Chicago's leading rival for title of most corrupt electoral system in the United States.
