Senator looking to restrict violent video games

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A state senator said Wednesday he is working on legislation that would put restrictions on violent video games sold in Michigan.

Sen. Hansen Clarke, D-Detroit, said he wants to stop children from being able to rent video games such as "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" which features characters who kill police officers and solicit prostitutes.

"Based on the video gaming industry's record of developing and heavily promoting excessively violent games, I no longer believe the industry can effectively police itself," Clarke said in a written statement.

Clarke said he wants to regulate the video gaming industry by setting a minimum age for buying or renting adult-rated video games and setting up criminal penalties for retailers who knowingly sell violent games to underage children.

Clarke said he intends to introduce his bills when the new legislative session begins in January.

Clarke isn't the only one trying to crack down on violent video games.

Earlier this week, Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich said he would push legislation next spring that would make it a misdemeanor to sell or rent adult-oriented video games to children. He said parents need help sheltering children from the games.

On Xmas eve I'm looking forward to going to my sister's house and tying out my nephew's copy of GTA: San Andreas.

And HL2 as well...

My nephew says it's incredible even with his old graphics card.

It's OK. I've seen it on maxed out graphics. The action gets a bit repetitive with Combine, then Zombies, then super zombies, then.... You get the idea. I thought Doom 3 had better ambience and Far Cry better game play and better graphics.

Gotta love that Grav Gun though. Record on saw blading Zombies is 12 in one shot for me.

Exactly. As far as warping their precious little minds though, if that were true then all those "Peace and Love" songs from the 60's and 70's would have had more of an impact.

I'm looking forward to see how the physics engine works...I was told the gravity gun was the best weapon in a game ever.

I really need to get a new graphics card and join 2004...or 2005.

The Super Grav Gun for the last level/sequence rocks.

Doesn't hold a candle to Angle Mappers UT2k4 "OMFG" Gun. Rapid fire multi-missile launcher. Not for close quarters work. ;-)

Seriously though, I'm holding off judgement on HL2 until I get some more online experience with it. So far, so ho-hum. Mediocre plot, bad ambience, predictable characters and the "puzzles" are pretty easy.

Doom 3 for the chills nad sheer eerieness of it. Far Cry for tactcs and game play in beautiful enviroments.

I'm gonna hold off until late '05. Multi-cored AMD with 16X SLI graphics oughta rock. I wonder if they'll step up to DDR2 by then?

I hate game consoles. Last one I actually paid for was the original Nintendo.

Not much in to sports games. More strategy and FPS type stuff. Head-to-head online with a bevy of your friends is the ONLY way to fly.

Far Cry was pretty. That river level was so real. I've been on a river like that.
