LOS ANGELES -- Shaquille O'Neal came to town to play Santa Claus to 250 kids Friday morning, and it didn't matter that the grinning basketball star was no longer a member of the home team.

After eight years as a star with the Los Angeles Lakers, O'Neal will play Saturday against the Lakers as a member of the Miami Heat.

But Friday, he was "Shaq-A-Claus" as he pulled up to the Challengers Boys & Girls Club in South Los Angeles in a truck filled with bicycles, Sony Playstations, karaoke machines, sneakers and other gifts.

"I'm glad to be back here. I miss everybody," O'Neal told reporters. "These kids are the future."

For several hours, O'Neal and teammate Damon Jones handed out gifts to the crowd. O'Neal bought many of the gifts himself during a Friday morning visit to a Toys-R-Us store.

"He gives back a lot to us," said 16-year-old Dwayne Gibbons, who received a video game console from O'Neal. "He went back to Miami, but he doesn't forget about us. That's why I love him."

It didn't matter to the crowd that O'Neal would take the court at the Staples Center wearing another uniform. O'Neal downplayed talk of rivalry with former teammate Kobe Bryant -- although earlier this week he spoke of himself as a "brick wall" against Bryant's "Corvette."

"Hopefully I'll get a great reception (from the crowd)," O'Neal said. "But who knows what's going to happen."

Kobe and his wife had hardly a high school education and they act like it. They should shut the hell up and if their own life is a soap opera, leave others out of it.

Shaq did LA no favors coming to work out of shape. That showed no respect and he does not deserve to have his jersy retired.

Kobe is Michael Jordan lite on a good day.
He often chokes under pressure and is quite the consistant ass.

I hope Shaq falls on him and Kobe busts a knee. It would do Los Angeles a favor.

Championships have always taken two superstars.

Who cares what bunch of oversized, prima donnas, running around in ultra baggy shorts, putting a ball through a hoop then beating themselves on the chest, while glaring at the crowd, are doing!

Kobe is estranged from his parents, becuase they objected to his marrying, and especially to mayying her. His dad was an NBA player, and I guess he knows first hand what life on the road is like..

Yes, his parents were objecting to him marrying a non-black.

Just racism, it does exist.

Have to admit I was not a basketball fan from a long time ago. But since they started with the tatoos, it reminds me of a street fight in the Bronx more than a basketball game.
I also take it they have changed the rules about traveling since I played. These guys traverse 1/2 the court without putting the ball on the court and it's not traveling. Basketball is morphing into a different game.

There's a FOOTBALL game on today?? Thanks, I needed that...Hey, got close against the Steelers, eh? Of course you knew the ending was gonna be Heartbreak Hotel.

Btw, hear Vasquez Thursday? He thinks the Yanks are making a "big mistake" if they trade 'em.

This from a guy who down a 9-game stretch run and playoffs managed to win ONE game.

He may do well in LA, but NY is a whole different animal....

And I hoid we're getting close to getting Milton.

I hear ya. Its just my cynical attitude...I grew up with Sharman, Bradley, Havlicek. But, the few white guys who dunk the ball usually just take the points and move on. They don't hang there doing an aerial end zone dance.

It is humorous that such people make such money with no class, no love and no binds that money cannot buy.

Jealous? Hardly. Try contempt.

I'm still trying to figure out if there is a single basketball skill that I don't do better than Shaq. I know I shoot better than him. I know I can dribble the ball better. I know I can make more foul shots. I know I have better lateral movement. I know I have a better vertical jump and get off the ground quicker. But he's 350 lbs and they allow him to travel every time he touches the ball, and they allow him to run over people, so he's a "star" in the league. Basketball is a joke, to me. Shaq has all the athleticism of a sumo wrestler.

Actually watching people spaghetti fat or not is more fun.

Why not try college basketball? There's more strategy involved and the kids actually care, even though they're not being paid $1 million dollars to play a kids game.

Try watching the best team in the NBA, the Suns. They have clocked them at scoring in 2.6 seconds after inbounding the ball from the other end.
