Reggie White Dies At 43

posted 12/26/2004

Reggie White

Future Hall of Famer Reggie White died Sunday morning after suffering a massive heart attack at his home near Huntersville, N.C.

Nicknamed "The Minister of Defense," Reggie White was one of the greatest defensive linemen in football history.

After eight years in Philadelphia, White joined the Packers in 1993 to help solidify their defense. He played a vital role in Green Bay's victory in Super Bowl XXXI, collecting a record three of the Packers' five sacks against the New England Patriots' Drew Bledsoe.

The Packers' all-time sack leader with 68.5, White also held the NFL's record with 192.5 career sacks until Bruce Smith surpassed that mark in 2003.

White also played a role in one of the Packers' most prominent modern traditions.

Recovering a fumble vs. the Raiders, Dec. 26, 1993, White returned the ball 10 yards before lateraling it to LeRoy Butler, who covered the remaining 25 yards into the end zone and leaped into the arms of fans in the south bleachers, beginning what would be forever known as the "Lambeau Leap."

Reggie White turned 43 on Dec. 19.

Reggie White Was one of my Favorite players of all times and a very Christian man both on and off the football field. He was a role model for me growing up and one of the best all time defense players that I know of. I am sure there is great saddness in Green Bay today he was was loved by the community. Please say a prayer for his family and the Packers teammates that are grieving his unexpected loss.

I am sure there is great saddness in Green Bay

And in Philly as well. (Reggie was an Eagle for 8 of his 15 seasons).

...beginning what would be forever known as the "Lambeau Leap."

Or, affectionately known by John Kerry as 'the Lambert Leap'...

I don't mind seeing this re-posted.
The other thread got somewhat derailed.

I'm no foot ball fan but I watched an interview with this man once and he was a living testimony to his Christian faith.

RIP Reggie White. He said things as he saw them, a first step that is necessary to promote change. Non-political yet real. Others will carry the torch to bring light where there is darkness.

Prayers for Reggie and his family. From another article I learned that his wife has been diagnosed with MS. She is going to need a lot of support from family and friends.

I loved Reggie and harbored a secret hope that he would return to Green Bay some day as a coach, or manager. He was an inspiration to the other players when he was here -- especially Bret.

One of my favorite stories concerning Reggie is when he was invited to addressthe Wisconisn legislature and he ended up exhorting them to find God. Caused a scandal, but they needed that! What did they expect when they invited a minister to speak? Football talk?

God Bless Reggie, and may the Perpetual Light shine upon him. I was always going to write him a fan letter to let him know how much this family thought of him, and I never did. Now I am especially regretful.

Guess the Lord decided to give him His final, best promotion.

I hope to talk to Mr White someday up there, if the Lord lets me in.
