Rumaisa, whose parents came from Hyderabad, India, weighed 8.6 ounces when she was delivered Sept. 19.

I know someone who was the size of an adult hand when he was born. He wasn't expected to live. His parents kept him in a shoebox inside the oven in Vietnam. This is not a joke. He's now about 6', a father, and a student in dental school with a Ph.D. in pharmacology.
And I thought my grandson was small at 2lbs 1oz.
You haven't lived until you've seen a "preemy" for the first time.

I thought she was tiny.
She wore Cabbage Patch clothes.
You are correct about seeing a preemy.
Every "pro-choicer" should be forced to hold one.
I felt like I had a case of vertigo when I walked into the NICU three and a half
years ago. My son told me later that he will never forget the look on my face.

And God love all the nurses, doctors in NICU....they are magnificent!
For years, both my daughter and I have been prolife...active!
But it surely brought it home when daughter got preeclampsia...(& has recovered wonderfully!)...and delivered our Christmas miracle.
So tiny....yet so perfectly formed....and to think of the millions of babies aborted who weighed the same ......
My twin nephews were 2 lb each. 7 years old now and wild as wolves.
Gosh... she is soooo tiny!! I've read she was about the size of a cell phone.
Proud Mommy of a preemie here..but mine was a giant 3 lbs : ))
We carried him around on the softest blanket we could finde all folded up....whenever I come across that blanket I smile.
What trimester was that baby when it was born?
My grandmother's sister was also a preemie, born on a farm in rural Indiana. Her bed was a shoebox on the oven door. My great-grandmother could slip her wedding ring over the baby's fist. Aunt Vi is now in her nineties.

Then there is that beautiful photo of the baby removed from an ectopic pregnancy, still in the sac. The doctor says it is only after they are dead that they look like "little blobs of tissue". Even in the 1st trimester, this little ectopic baby looked like what it was: a baby.

Sheez..that is amazing!! My "monsters" were both born at 7 months and were 4 pounds and 4 pounds 7 oz...the four pound one required heart surgery at 7 days and intestinal surgery at 2 months..I cannot imagine what this little girl required..but I am sure that she will thrive just like my angels..now 25 and 9 years and the strongest toughest kids you ever saw.
This little one and other surviviors of premature birth should be 'Pro-Life, poster babies'.
And while I'm at it...
..all of you parents of preemies.....
Did you wait longer to allow your precious babies immunization?
My thinking is their immune systems are too immature to handle the required shots?
Any thoughts?
I was under 5lb too I was told...in an incubator...2 months premature...(My lungs give me problems....they are the last to develope)
31 years ago, our twins weighed 2.7 and 3.7. Real giants compared to this little one.
My mom was about that size. She was born on a farm in Texas in 1912; they placed her in a shoe box and put her by the fire place. No doctors around. After working to save my grandmother, her aunt thought to look at the baby to see if it was still alive...and she was! They gave her sugar water to survive. She was so small, when you placed a tea cup over her head, it completely hid it. She lived to marry and have two very healthy children.
I am torn on that one. The peaceful part of me agrees with you, but the bitter part of me thinks that pro-choicers should have to stay as far away from children as possible.
But isn't that just a lump of tissue?

Premature grandson changed, immediately and forever, all my stupid Pro Choice ideas! I tell anyone who will listen to go see some preemies (if they can figure out how to get in) and then talk to me. It ought to be part of every young persons education to be taken to a preemie nursery.
My father-in-law was the same -- they kept him in a shoebox by the stove or the fireplace. I think he also weighed two pounds -- he's 74 now.

I remember that picture and the article that went along with it! Still brings tears to my eyes.
Visiting a NICU is about enough to make anyone cry. My son was full term and big (almost 9 pounds) but has seizure disorder so he was sent to a NICU a few hours after he was born. There were 10 other babies there, only one other of which was full term (had hepatitis IIRC). The rest were all crack babies - tiny, premature, and with the most pitiful shivering and crying imaginable. The only other parent present was the lady with the full-term baby. I do not know where any of the other mothers were, but they may well have been incarcerated.
Isn't it great what happened even before medicine got to today's level of sophistication?
One great uncle (born in the 1880s) was 2 pounds at birth, and he, like others mentioned here, lived in the warming oven of the wood cookstove for several months.
One winter when he was in his 60s, he decided upon a goal: he wanted to be able to say he'd gone from 2 pounds, to 200. So, he spent all winter relaxing and eating, hit 200 pounds by March, went back to his normal diet, and immediately dropped back to 140... but he had reached his goal.
Amazing images... we're at 8 months gestation now, and our older children are really fascinated by unborn baby pictures, because they like to know what their sister looks like, how big she is, etc...
I was a preemie (3 lbs. 3 oz) in the early 50's when a lot of them either didn't survive or developed blindness in the eyes due to the hot lights of the incubators. Fortunately, my hospital was aware of the problem and protected my eyes for the several weeks I was in an incubator. However, I met another woman my age, also a preemie, who had very limited vision, almost legally blind, so I wonder if her problem was due to incubator lights.
Well, I am especially happy about it! :) She was a great mom.

Got caught up in this discussion of preemies, and the exchange between the two of you.
It perfectly illustrates one of my favorite cinematic
moments: A scene in a hospital between a doctor and a mentally retarded man as they regard a preemie in an incubator. It's in Werner Herzog's movie "Stroszek"
It is simply a transcendent scene.See it if you can.

Try to see the movie "Stroszek" I mentioned. Probably available on Netflix, or buy it on Ebay. Unforgettable.

Just because someone is pro-choice does not mean he/she is a baby killer or a kid killer. There are so many good mothers, doctors, and caregivers that are pro-choice and they amazing at taking care of children.
Being pro-choice means letting women have the right to make a choice.

It is not a choice when the 'choice'(sic) crosses the line and imposes on another's rights... specifically, where is her choice in this 'choice'?
All our personal freedoms end when they impose on the basic freedoms of another. We aren't free to steal another's property, nor are we free to take another's life in most circumstances.
Every pro-abortion person needs to understand that babies at this stage are killed every day. This little precious gift from God weighed a little more than 8oz and a measured a whole 9”, but she survived. How can someone look at this picture and think she’s a choice? She’s a human being, created by God.
