It is amazing how some people on FR cling to some fantasy world and will grasp at anything, no matter how remote, to try to prove their point. This is a perfect example where stills from a current movie filmed in Thailand are being used unscrupulously to further a private agenda.

...based on my many conservations with former captives of Communist Vietnam's "Re-Education" prison camps...

...the Vietnamese-American Motion Picture production "The JOURNEY from the Fall" accruately depicts the inhumane suffering imposed on them by their Godless Communist captors after the Vietnam War.

"Why did they do this to me?" was their uniform question.

"Because they COULD" was my uniform answer.

NOTE: I personaly have had my fingers placed in the large and long scars that are left from formerly Free Vietnamese men & women's having had their stomachs cut open by their Communist Vietnamese captors. Scars that are about one inch wide, one half inch deep ..running from their middle stomach down to their navel.

There is NO agenda here, except that of sharing the CLARITY of what really happened in a once Free South Vietnam after we Americans abandened it to heavily Soviet-backed Communist invaders from the North.

As the North used more tanks for its final solution in the South, at the end, than Gen. PATTON needed to win World War II with in Europe.

Pictures of victims from Cambodia's Kiling Fields we've seen but not of what the Vietnamese Communists did to other Vietnamese ..after the Fall ..of Saigon.

This is the real service "JOURNEY from the Fall" will give to the world when widely seen. As I was blessed to see in a premiere movie preview on the 30th Anniversary of the Fall of Saigon ...in the town I grew up in here.

From Amnesty International - not a CHRISTIAN organization. Of course they were not arrested for being Christian per se. The guy was arrested for distributing religious material without the consent of the gov't. The gal was arrested for protesting.

I imagine charges for the other 7498 are along a similar vein and have nothing whatsoever to do with their "beliefs".



Amnesty International warmly welcomes reports that two prisoners of conscience will soon be released as part of an amnesty for more than 7500 prisoners. The amnesty marks the 30th anniversary of the end of the Viet Nam War on 30 April.

Among those to be released are Reverend Pham Ngoc Lien, a 63-year-old member of the Catholic Congregation of the Mother Co-Redemptrix (CMC), who has spent the last 18 years in prison, and Le Thi Hong Lien, a young woman teacher for the Mennonite Christian Church, who has reportedly suffered beatings and abuse during 11 months of imprisonment .

"The anticipated release of these two people, both in poor health, is long overdue and a welcome, positive step," Amnesty International said. "However, we once again call for the Vietnamese authorities to release all prisoners of conscience and to stop incarcerating political and religious activists for exercising their fundamental human rights to freedom of expression, association and religion".

"Unless substantive changes are made to the law, all Vietnamese people remain at risk of arrest simply for peacefully expressing their political and religious beliefs."

"Despite releasing these prisoners of conscience, the Vietnamese authorities are continuing to flout domestic and international law by using security legislation to imprison people for the peaceful exercise of their rights to freedom of expression, association and religion, despite guarantees in the Vietnamese Constitution and international human rights law. It is time for the authorities to take responsibility for upholding and protecting the human rights of everyone."

Background

Reverend Pham Ngoc Lien (Tri) (63), is a member of the Congregation of the Mother Co-Redemptrix (CMC), who has been imprisoned for the last 18 years. He was among a group of 23 Roman Catholic monks and priests arrested in May 1987 during raids on Thu Duc monastery, near Ho Chi Minh City, for holding training courses and distributing religious books without government permission. In October 1987, he was sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment plus five years' house arrest on release under national security legislation for "conducting propaganda to oppose the socialist regime and undermine the policy of solidarity". The other 22 monks arrested were also sentenced to between four years and life imprisonment; all have been released except for Reverend Pham Ngoc Lien (Tri) and Brother Nguyen Thien Phung (Huan), who have been adopted as prisoners of conscience by Amnesty International for many years.To Amnesty International's knowledge, Brother Nguyen Thien Phung is not included in the current amnesty and will remain in Z30A prison, Dong Nai province.

Le Thi Hong Lien, 21, a teacher for the Vietnamese Mennonite Christian Church, was arrested in June 2004 along with a number of other members of the Mennonite community. On 12 November, she was sentenced to 12 months in prison on charges of "resisting a person performing official duty" for her role in a protest. Members of the Mennonite Church, and other religious organizations that are not sanctioned by the state, have suffered official harassment and imprisonment for many years. Le Thi Hong Lien had taken part in a number of demonstrations against the government's policies on religion, and had been arrested many times. She is reported to have been subjected to beatings and abuse during her imprisonment, resulting in a serious deterioration in her physical and mental health. In February she was transferred to Bien Hoa Mental Hospital under the charge of prison guards.

Commission Releases Report on Religious Freedom
Recommends listing six additional "countries of particular concern"

The Commission on International Religious Freedom, releasing its annual report May 12, recommended that 11 nations be designated "countries of particular concern" (CPC) for their curtailment or denial of religious freedom.

In addition to the five countries currently listed by the U.S. State Department as CPCs -- Burma, China, North Korea, Iran, and Sudan -- the committee asked Secretary of State Colin Powell to add six additional countries -- Eritrea, India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkmenistan and Vietnam -- to the list.

According to the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998 (IRFA), those countries that meet the statutory criteria in that act must be designated by the secretary of state as CPCs.

However, "the simple designation by the U.S. government of a severe violator of religious freedom as a CPC is not sufficient action," the report said. "The policy of the United States also must be to take active steps in response to those countries deemed to be particularly egregious religious freedom violators."

In addition to CPC designations, the commission made several recommendations regarding religious freedom in Afghanistan and Iraq where, according to the report, "the United States has a particular responsibility to ensure that the newly formed governments are functioning democracies that protect human rights, including religious freedom." The report specifically discusses the necessity of protecting freedoms of thought, conscious and religion in the newly developed constitutions of those nations.

The Commission on International Religious Freedom was created by the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998 to make recommendations on issues of religious freedom to the president, secretary of state and Congress.

Finally in regard to the pictures shown in the original entry on Re-Education in Vietnam: Picture #2 - The arms are pulled up behind them in an elevated position. It has been a long time but I recall the returning POWs discussing the North Vietnamese torturing them with the "Rope Trick" which involoved pulling the arms back and up with ropes or chains in some fashion. It recalled this means of torture the moment I saw the picture though it may have varied from that of the Hanoi Hilton era. Realize that if the person pictured faints or becomes unable to stand the pressure on the arms and the shoulder joints would be excruciating and would likely cause the arm to leave the shoulder socket.
