Below is excerpt from referenced article:
"Phuket, which alone receives about 1.5 million tourists during the peak holiday season between November and February, is expected to suffer among the greatest losses. But on Phuket's Kata beach, some foreign tourists Monday afternoon had already collected broken beach umbrellas and were back relaxing on the sand despite some locals spreading rumors that more waves were about to hit the island. In the evening, some small restaurants that survived were packed out with foreigners."

At least they're helping the economy?
Just amazing.
Welcome to FR.
I guess the smell of the rotting bodies isn't so bad there.
I suppose all the dead bodies laying around don't bother them much
Unbelievable .. and they say Americans are heartless

Heck, they can't get out, where are they supposed to eat??
As to relaxing on the beach, well seems that their time could be better spent. If I saw them kicking back on the beach, they most likely wouldn't have to worry about eating again...ever.
Jack
Guilt? Grrrrrrrr.
Well if your room was blown away...you had no way to get home, you are not a local what do you expect them to do? I would GUESS...they may be tired and hungrey...I suspect they just want to get the hell out of there...but they might have to take a backseat to the injured being removed via airlines...ohhh the smugness of a person sitting on a chair on the beach when most of the STUFF around them has been destroyed or blown away....HMMMMMMM
Personally I wouldn't get involved...the diseases...imagine stewpping on a rusty nail? Or worse...getting exhausted and thirsty and having no water to drink...personally I would be having a panic attack of just wanting TO GET HOME!
The Frogs always leave their old folks at home to fry when they go on vacation.
Same type of behavior.
HMMMMMM I suspect a bad translation on the word GUILT...
While I'm not one to normally defend our fair weather "allies" in Europe, this quote does not appear anywhere in the article. The Europeans do a good enough job of making themselves look foolish, there is no need for fabrications.
Sorry, just fomenting ....
Couldn't find that in the story, do you have a link to the article it's in. Thanks.
OMG !
Can't find that quote- link please?
It's REALLY gonna be GREAT to watch the Islamic hordes swallow Europe and subjugate the Euro-PEE-ons.
You should have found a way to work in the evil Halliburton, so people would know you were adding your own commentary. (Then again, maybe they wouldn't)
More people have died as a result of this tsunami than in Iraq on EITHER side. More people are homeless too.
The left doesn't care about people. They only care about numbers and politics.

British Firefighter Helped Save Tourists from Tsunami
By Andrew Barrow, PA
A hero firefighter fought to save other tourists as they struggled in Thailands raging seas but made sure his first phone call home was to cancel his lost credit cards, his father said today.
Birmingham fireman Roy Phillips who was himself battered and bruised by the Asian tsunami repeatedly returned to the foaming waters off the coast of Phuket to save fellow tourists who were being sucked out by the tides.
Roys father, David Phillips, told PA that his son had been out of touch for four days on a diving holiday and had only phoned his family on Boxing Day morning.
They were still unaware of the tragedy unfolding in south-east Asia.
Mr Phillips said: Roy said he wanted to cancel some credit cards. He had lost virtually everything but he was quite calm about it. He phoned again a bit later and we learned a bit more.
Roy, 33, from Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, was a lifeguard before joining the fire service eight years ago. He was described by his father as a strong swimmer and a qualified master diver who had gone to Thailand with friends earlier this month.
Mr Phillips, 63, said his son had been sunbathing when the giant wave hit the resort. He was on the trip with fiancee Debbie Watkins and, after making sure she was safe, he returned to the waters to rescue other struggling tourists, despite being badly cut and bruised himself.
We are very proud, said Mr Phillips. We are thrilled to bits and we are just waiting for him to come back.
Mr Phillips said the authorities were not letting people return to their apartments and Roy had not been able to gather his belongings and plan his journey home. He was due to fly back into Birmingham this Thursday but was having difficulty confirming flights.
All he was left with was a pair of shorts and some flip-flops, he said. Now he is staying on higher ground.
He keeps the sim card from his mobile phone in his pocket so he was able to use that to phone us when he borrowed a mobile from somewhere, none of the landlines seem to work. We cant get hold of him but our daughter has spoken to him since.
Mark Taylor, spokesman for the West Midlands Fire Service, praised Roys bravery but said it was typical of what all emergency workers would do in such a situation.
Mr Taylor told PA: This is typical of all firefighters.
This is what we would expect from any of our firefighters or any firefighters from this country who find themselves in this sort of situation where they can help any community wherever they are in the world.

Euros do not help anyone. Asians only help family members. My experience in Viet Nam in 03 indicates that at least some Asians think Americans are different. Twice I stopped to help in situations, once when a motorbike with 4 people aboard slid down on the street in Sai Gon and once near Nha Trang to push a motorbike up over an obstacle for two very small women who were struggling with it. I thought of it as simply what one one does when one sees someone in trouble like that. To the VietNamese at the scene the acts identified me immediately as an American. I could hear them talking about it.
I know I would stay put, wait for contact from my travel agent, family, embassy (whoever, etc...so I could get out of there ASAP. Wandering around and getting into more of harms way isn't going to help matters any.
Would I be an ass about it, of course not, would I offer to be a communication method by being a responsible person to be found at a chair on an open beach...possibly...I think that is what has everybody here in a turmoil...the "European Attitude"...but that is something I can not control, their attitude or even yours.
BUT again I repeat, I would remain in control of the only thing I would most likely have left AT THAT point in that circumstance, my health...and I would guard it dearly.
Not so great. Just as Nazism under Hitler made Europe dangerous to the US, and had to be defeated, so too Islamofascism controlling the resources and people of Europe would endanger US security and economic interests. European technical expertise would not disappear overnight, nor would its industries. As much as I would LOVE to see French women under the veils and cursing their horrid lives, we cannot allow it to happen. If Europeans won't prevent Islamism from overtaking their continent, eventually we would have to rid Europe of yet another fascist movement. Again, we'd have to join with the Russians to do it.
Thankfully, I believe that Europeans will only be pushed so far before they wake up and rid their countries of the fifth column that is Islam. Holland is already waking up.
This is what happens when you have 6 weeks of paid vacation each year.
Get a look at this.
While Nazism and Hitler were dangerous, it was because they were Industrious. The Islamofascists are stuck in the 12th century and will remain so. They will drag the Euro-pee-ons down with them and we can remain aloof, except if they threaten the Brits. I'd fight for the Brits. The Froganistanis can smell my dirty skivvies for all I care about them.
Pitch in and help?
Does anybody know what that means?
Excuse me sir, we are removing bodies off this beach. Could you please move your chair for a moment? Thank-you, we'll only be a minute. These are children and we can carry them two at a time and get them out of here so that you can go back to enjoying your stay in Phuket. Thank-you sir you may sit back down and please, have a nice day.
googled this:
Subscriber Identity Module card - a small printed circuit board that must be inserted in any GSM-based mobile phone when signing on as a subscriber. It contains subscriber details, security information and memory for a personal directory of numbers. The card can be a small plug-in type or sized as a credit-card but has the same functionality. The SIM card also stores data that identifies the caller to the network service provider
I think that was a parody that Scythian wrote. He must have omitted the </sarcasm> tag.
Now that's low...........
I've been wondering, didn't anybody there notice the water receding
at least a 1/2 mile out? One would think that this action
would be a clue as to what was about to happen.
Just an observation.
I would keep my self near the beach with a breeze to keep mosquitoes at bay, I would act as a command station where people could leave and retrieve messages...and I guess I would look like a lazy tourist.
I am NOT equipped or capable of hauling dead bodies around, moving automobiles, lifting buildings or managing any situation when MY native tongue isn't theirs!
It is amazing to me how some people here claims WHAT they would do when in all reality you haven't fully thought out the DANGERS involved with all the keyboard bravado.
The outsiders and tourists there better remain very cautious. ESPECIALLY placing themselves in a situation where clean water and safe food will SOON turn many victims and heros into selfish savages. Look at Haiti after the hurricanes...funny how hunger and thirst screw up good intentions.
I saw film of a lot of people using cell phones; I wondered how they kept them charged -- and I wondered what provider services the entire world. :-)
I haven't seen a LESS compassionate post on FR than yours in the six years I've been here.
How utterly self-serving.
Nobody said you'd have to haul bodies; but there is plenty to do over there, besides think of yourself.
BTW, I wouldn't advise you to "give counsel" to people in a disaster ANYWHERE.
What a disgrace. I hope those aren't Americans sitting around in the sun on those beaches. I'll bet they are Europeans. And they should be hauled off to do hard labor, ASAP.
GSM phones have very long battery life - 1+ week on standby, 12 hours talk time.
Also, they have a small card you slide into them - an identity module, that activates them on the carrier service in the country you are in. so if you travel with the phone to a foreign country, you can buy a prepaid SIM card there and slide it into your phone, and it will work on that country's cellular carrier system for however many minutes you have purchased.
In your example, this fellow must have had his SIM card but no working phone (or no battery), so when he got hold of one, he plugged his SIM card into it and the phone assumed his identity (number, carrier, calling plan, etc).
Point taken .. but I think you would be cabpable of asking some one .. anyone if you could help out in other ways
I too am not capable of hauling dead bodies either .. but I sure am able to get off my fat *ss and help in other ways instead of just sitting on a beach
Very interesting. (Can you tell what a homebody I am?)
See Rebelbase's reply for the technical info. Simply put it's the small chip in the 'phone which contains all the information allowing you to connect to a network, make calls, send text messages as well as containing numbers, photos etc. With it you can make calls from anyone else's mobile phone
I'd be suspicious of what I'm being served in these restaurants.
Excuse me while I go wretch.
Lord, God, I choose to forgive such idiots so I can be forgiven. But, Lord, if it seems at all fitting to you, how about bringing such arrogance resoundingly full force into the hideous brick wall of their unremitting paragon arrogance and haughtiness. Show them their hearts and cause them to be terminally repulsed by their own words and attitudes and actions/inactions. In Jesus' Name.
LOL apparently you are a much better person than I am...good for YOU!
I might at least be quite inclined to stack a wall of dead bodies around their smug repose.
