My folks moved up into this area about that time. That, along with all the wild game, made it attractive to great-great-etc. grandaddy. Mom's family lived on top of a mountain in Wautaga Co. NC and Dad was from just across the TN border.
The whole bunch got tired of farming in rock piles and packed up and moved Beverly Hillbillys style in the 50's to WA for the logging jobs ($8/day).
My family and I still don't care for the gummit telling how to live. I have some pretty colorful uncles...
