Thought I would try setting up a thread for the posting of pics and videos of the killer tital waves and the aftermath. Add them here and we may end up with a pic/video collection in one place.
Click on these words when you get to the link (site not in English).
Dermed kan du selv se hvor sterke vannmassene var da den andre bølgen kom.
Bump for later.
Computer model of tsunami, by NOAA
FYI.Re our discussion earlier, see the animation in #6 this thread..it clearly shows the wave direction..and cleverly confirms the answers alreaddy given me...thanks again..
It wasn't a tidal wave. Tidal waves are related to the gravity of the moon. Tsunamis (or seismic sea waves) are related to volcanic eruptions, earthquakes or sea floor disturbances.
These folks appear to be way too casual about the whole thing.
BJungNan, thank you. This is great to put them all together on one thread. I am not sure if something like this has been done here already, if so, can anyone please post those threads on this one. I will keep this one as my main reference.
That water looked to have risen to 4-5 feet deep, on the second floor.
Many years ago I was the news director of a radio station in Mobile, AL. One of the major seismic centers in the US in those days was at Spring Hill College, also in Mobile. From time to time I had occasion to call the college and speak with the priest who was in charge of the seismology department there. He would become practically violent if you used the term 'tidal wave'. It was like he considered himself to be on a mission directly from God to make certain everyone called these events by their real name 'tsunamis'. After you got past the initial indoctrination to the proper terminology for these events he was very personable, very knowledgeable and willing to talk at length about them. I can never hear of one of these without thinking about that priest!
So what's with the Red and the Blue, Democrat and Republican currents?
WOW, way cool. Thanks for the ping.
Re#7 First time for me to see the videos. OMG. The beach shot in the first filled with people (and children) tears my heart out. May God take all of the innocents into His arms...
Bump for later
Did you see #9..posted after my comment?..even better.
son of a beach!
trouble in paradise.
Good thing the bugger with the camera moved back fast!
Here is the video link to your posted article.

I saw the whole video earlier today. They are casual. You hear someone in the background when it starts commenting it is coming "again." They appeared to be sightseeing.
Yep, awesome. If one looks closely, notice that the epicenter of the quake is near the southern most portion of the source area. That 9.0 triggered fault movement northward across most of the subduction zone.
The original maps..showing the epicenter as a single point source..were very misleading...
They were accurate, just that the public isn't familiar with an earthquake of that magnitude and the associated displacement. Plus these figures are several days post quake, so more analysis has been conducted and a better picture is seen. I myself am quite amazed, for comparison it would be like the whole San Andreas fault rupturing. That is very large scale.
Height above or below sea level, but I don't know which is which just yet. I think red is below, but I'm not sure. Darker color=more difference.
"These folks appear to be way too casual about the whole thing."
Thats what I was thinking. If it was me I believe I would be trying to climb on the roof instead of taking pictures.
Last night I was hearing accounts on TV and one guy said he ran into his hotel room to look for his camera before the wave hit. He ran back outside just in time to grab his kid and start running before they were swept into a Mangrove swamp. Luckily he survived but I don't think cameras would be my first thought on seeing a tsunami bearing down on my family. Perhaps it is just me?
Thanks for the Ping. Some truly remarkable video here.
Dec 19, 2004 JAKARTA (Reuters) - Several loud blasts believed to be caused by a meteor shower echoed across the Indonesian capital Jakarta and nearby towns early on Sunday, startling residents who reported seeing flying objects in the sky.
Police said they had found no evidence that the blasts were caused by bomb attacks. An official from the Indonesian space center LAPAN told the official Antara news agency the explosions were likely to have been caused by a meteor shower.
"It's suspected that a fireball originating from a big meteor entered the earth's atmosphere This created the explosion," said LAPAN space expert Thomas Djamaluddin.
Police, on high alert after warnings from Western governments of possible terror attacks over the Christmas and New Year period, had said they were investigating the blasts.
"The police have searched throughout the regency and we found nothing to indicate a bomb or meteor," said one officer on duty in Tangerang.
Indonesian air force spokesman Sagom Tambun said there had been no radar readings indicating a meteor.
One caller to El Shinta radio from Bogor, just south of Jakarta, reported seeing a large object hit the earth in the distance.
Western governments, especially Australia, have warned that an international hotel could be targeted for attack, possibly one of the three Hiltons in the world's most populous Muslim nation.
In Washington, the State Department issued a fresh warning late last week for Americans to avoid non-essential travel to Indonesia, saying "the terrorist threat continues and may increase over the December-January holiday period."
"Reports indicate that terrorists are planning attacks against a wide variety of targets," the State Department said.
Police have tightened security across the country.
Islamic militants from Jemaah Islamiah, seen as the regional arm of al Qaeda, have launched bomb attacks in recent years in Indonesia, hitting nightclubs in Bali, the JW Marriott Hotel in Jakarta and the Australian embassy in the capital.
In the worst attack, 202 people were killed in Bali two years when militants bombed two nightclubs. The dead included 88 Australians.
Police have deployed an additional 18,400 personnel for Christmas and New Year to protect churches and entertainment centers across Indonesia. (Reporting by Harry Suhartono, Telly Nathalia and Jerry Norton)
