Thousands of toy guns that were for sale in costume and novelty shops in New York state have been removed as part of a settlement between the state attorney general's office and two national wholesalers, the New York Times reported Dec. 20. Attorney General Eliot Spitzer had accused the wholesalers of distributing 12,000 toy guns in 2001 in violation of a state law which previously had applied only to retailers. New York State bans the sale of toy guns in stores unless they have a permanent orange stripe running down both sides of the barrel. Without admitting wrongdoing, Rubie's Costumes Co. agreed to pay $27,000 in civil penalties and costs and Franco American Novelty Co. agreed to pay $10,000. Spitzer said that toy guns pose a public danger because police sometimes mistake them for the real thing. In 1997, he said, four people were killed and a child was seriously injured when police thought toy guns were real ones. |

Now, come on! How ridiculous are things going to get in New York? Will orange-striped barrels really prevent kids from being shot by police? What about simply urging parents to teach their little brats not to point toy guns at the police?

That'll stop the rise in toy crimes!!!
Imaginary bullets kill more imaginary people than any other known cause.

The real problem is how will the NY legislature mandate not an orange stripe down the barrel of every toy gun, but a yellow stripe down the back of every New Yorker.

Now, some enterprising hit man (or hit woman) will buy some orange tape and run it down the sides of his/her gun barrel, so their victim will only believe it to be a toy gun....until it is too late!
The point is: They are a bunch of damned liars at the Brady Center (aka Handgun Control) and the Million Moron March is just a bunch of their lackeys.

Toy guns are hard to find. I've got three boys who love to play Army, and we're constantly on the hunt for toy guns. Besides, they're all plastic and break within minutes of getting them out of the packaging.

That would mean individual responsibility. Something liberals either are unable to do or detest as it is much easier to blame society.

Just get your toy guns from here. I've seen those and with a little bit of black spray paint they are quite convincing.
Cool! Just don't point them at a cop (or a CCW permit holder, armed homeowner, dude with an axe, etc...)

BTW....until you have had a toy gun pointed at you in the course of a "gun complaint", you should refrain, I think, from throwing stones at incompetent cops. How 'bout stupid kids with toy guns? I came somewhat close to smokin' a 15 year-old who refused to drop what appeared to be a fully-functional 45ACP. The little bugger pointed it right at me while telling me it was a toy.
And that was 15 years ago. Today, I might not be so hesitant: I keep finding real ones in the booty-cracks of juvenile arrestees in my booking room. Sobering!

What about simply urging parents to teach their little brats not to point toy guns at the police?Thats a silly comment. You don't have to point a toy gun at a cop to have him/her shoot you.
Does any one remember the incident on haloween about 3 or 4 years ago in California?
Here is what I remember. Police were called about a loud party on haloween. Two young cops arrive and decide to walk around the back of the house. Rookie female afirmative action hire peers through a window and sees a man with a gun in a room full of people and blows him away.
It turns out that the poor guy (now dead) was a black bit part actor on a network series.
I never did hear what happened to the trigger happy rookie female cop, or the outcome of the law suit that was sure to follow and rightfully should have.
Toy guns can kill.

"Toy guns can kill."
You've fallen into the trap!
Toy guns, SUV's, and real guns don't kill.
Killing is an act of aggression, or a mistake. Neither of which can be made by an inanimate object.
Unqualified, over reactive female cops can kill.

How about, "Dumb, incompetent, trigger-happy, out-of-control cops can cause you to be killed, toy gun or not."And you need to remember this if you ever feel like clowning around with a toy gun. You also need to remember that a lot of people carry concealed now too and may mistake your toy 45 to be real and ventilate you also.
I don't see a problem with making toy guns look like toy guns.
