Vatican raps Israel for 'denying disaster'
J Post ^ | 29 dec 04 | Staff

Posted on 12/29/2004 4:37:34 AM PST by white trash redneck

The Vatican newspaper has denounced what it called a decision by the IDF to deny emergency help to disaster victims in Sri Lanka.

Calling for "a radical and dramatic change of perspective" among people "too often preoccupied with making war," L'Osservatore Romano singled out Israeli military leaders for declining a request for emergency medical help.

Contrary to the Vatican report, an Israeli plane carrying 80 tons of food and medical supplies worth $100,000 was set to depart for Sri Lanka Wednesday morning. At the request of the Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry, a team of some 150 Israeli medical and security personnel aborted their planned trip to the island nation Tuesday night.

The Vatican paper observed that in what "should be a time for unconditional solidarity," some world leaders seem incapable of escaping a "small-minded approach that restricts their horizons."

The fact that the devastation swept across different societies, cultures, and nations should help to reinforce the universal perspective, the paper suggested. (Jerusalem Post staff and agencies)

This is too rich for words.

The Israelis offer aid to Sri Lanka, the Sri Lankans refuse it, and now the Vatican castigates the Israelis for refusing to send aid!

No good deed goes unpunished!

The Catholic Church should sit down and shut up. What have they done to aid the Sri Lankans?

actually, Sri Lanka objected to a certain military component of the Israeli contingent (since the IDF is mobilized and ready to go it forms an important part of the team) and the Israelis readjusted the makeup of the team and as i understand, it is going in. the Vatican must be reading the MSM like the Nyt WaPo etc and getting their bad info from them -- or perhaps it is showing the ugly underside of some of its membership. i really don't think the Pope would speak like this.

I honestly can't see how the Vatican could have put that spin on it - Sri Lanka was pretty public about refusing Israeli aid.

One thing you have to remember, however, is that many people at the Vatican are raving leftists. They got into "Liberation Theology" in the 60s and eventually got kicked upstairs to the Vatican, where they now view everything through their hard-left lens (which of course also means condemning Israel at every turn, truth be damned).

The 1986 Red Sox couldn't have screwed up the Altar Boy scandal as badly the Vatican. Who the *heck* do they think they are to be "casting stones". I think the Vatican gets a bad rap for anti-Semetism during the war, but they're working hard to earn it now.

It also doesn't apply to the pope or anyone else in the Roman Catholic Church, just in case anyone is wondering.

You asked, "When did the Vatican become antisemitic?"

Or anti-seismic?
I suspect The Vatican Newspaper, like the (US is stingy) Norweigan UN official, will declare their words inoperative. It's one thing for Europe, and the Vatican to criticize Israel's treatment of Palestinians, quite another for them to incorrectly report facts. But Israel is used to this kind of thing....I remember it happening when they tried to send assistance to Iran. Too bad the US can't (or won't) say to the Moslem world, "you won't accept assistance from Israel? Until you do, we'll assume you won't accept assistance from us either!

Not really, I'll note the initial composition of the team below. Many emergency personell in Israel are military, thus deploying Doctors, nurses etc is a "military deployment" which is what Sri Lanka objected to. Like the US sending a hospital ship. The "reduced team" consists of the 4 individuals flown out immediately to assess the needs.

IDF SPOKESPERSON ANNOUNCEMENT December 27th, 2004 IDF humanitarian and medical delegation leaving for Sri Lanka

An IDF humanitarian and medical delegation will arrive to the area of devastation in Sri Lanka in the wake of the disaster. The delegation will be sent following the decision of the Defense Minister and the IDF Chief of Staff and in coordination with the Foreign Ministry.

The delegation will include approximately 150 rescue and medical personnel including doctors, nurses and paramedics, and will be under the command of the Chief of the Home-Front Command Staff, Brigadier General Avraham Ben David (Benda).

The delegation that will leave on IAF and leased aircraft, will be equipped with medical equipment and supplies, water, food and other equipment such as tents, blankets, mattresses and generators.

A medical facility will be assembled at the location, comprising of specialist doctors, an emergency department, an internal medicine department, a pediatric department as well as laboratory and X-ray facilities.

Too many in the Vatican hierarchy are lib-Euros who are enamored of their "dialog" with Muslims, dislike the US, dislike Israel, and let no opportunity pass to castigate either the US, Israel, or both. No different from the rad-lib hierarchies in the mainline Protestant denominsations (Episcopal, Presbyterian, Methodist, etc.) Same bunch of stale hippie leftovers that flunked tacky-and-tasteless 101 at Berkely or the local rad-"seminary" in 1968. For any of them, no matter what the US and Israel do or do not do, they will only receive criticism and condemnation from these CINOs.

No good deed goes unpunished, indeed!

As a Catholic of 70 Years and with the recent history of Sexual abuse in the Church, I believe the infallibility of the Pope is seriously in question.

Between the pope and his Henchmen in the vatican they have seriously undermind the credibility and stature of the Catholic Church and continue to do so.

The church has a long way to go to clean up their own mess before sending out critical and dumb remarks about some one else.

You have no idea what Papal infallibility really means, apparently. It has nothing whatsoever to do with prudential judgements, or the lack thereof. It applies only to select matters of faith and morals.

That said, the Pope is ill-served by many of the Euro cardinals who surround him. Many are downright anti-semitic and anti-American.

Indeed, things like this keep me wondering how I managed to cross the Tiber at all! I have to keep reminding myself that there is the real Church and the CINOs-euroweenies in the hierarchy. The CINOs-euroweenies are the ones that seem to have all the microphones and newspapers, unfortunately!

Really. I've carried a number of things with me when I crossed the Tiber from Protestant Christianity. One of them was/is that if the "liberal" (i.e., radical, anti-US, anti-Israel, water-down-doctrine, etc.) CINO wing of any part of Christianity criticizes the US and Israel for anything, then I'll automatically support the US and Israel. A variation on my theory that if the Euroweenie-libs in the Vatican, the ECUSA HQ in NYC, and similar sorts in other denominations disapprove of something, then what they disapprove of is likely something very good that deserves my support!

"Isn't the Bible pretty clear in its direction to support Israel?"

Yes, it is very clear. Individual have only two choices. To either bless or curse Israel, nothing in between. Those who curse her, God promises to curse them. Those who Bless her, God promises to bless. The next question is where is your absolute final authority, in God's Holy Bible or in Man.

The longer one puts off putting his faith in God's Holy Word, the better chance they have or their heart's being hardened, their eyes growing dark and never being able to see the truth again. God is slow to anger, but time is running out.

The Pope is a human being appointed to that position by human beings. Even in teachings and interpretations, do you truly believe that human error does or cannot play a part????

As a lifelong Catholic, the church has become an utter disgrace and embarasment, on almost everything.

I think a relative tangent to your question is the make up of the early church. Until Paul actively started evangalizing to the gentiles, the church was made up of almost all Jewish people. Peter of course was Jewish and he is the rock upon which the church is built.
