Some Trees, couple hundred Moholes, Some nitrogen from Titan, couple aquifers here and there and Mars too could need some woman.

Are the environmentalists going to sit still for us introducing "non-indigenous species" into Mar's pristine ecosystem?

That's what I was thinking - don't put it past them.

After all, the trees might destroy those "old growth" rocks on Mars.

No, Helen Thomas is too old and too fat to send to Mars. That pretty much stops the "horrible alien swamp things that attack us and suck our brains out" problem. . .

Didn't Martian Customs ask the lander if it was carrying any fruits, plants or other non indiginous flora? How much booze did it sneak up there?

This is total B.S.! NASA just a couple of weeks ago addressed the issue of contamination of other planets and moons by space crafts and this would be a huge contamination of Mars. Sounds like a story from the National Enquirer or Globe's great staff of reporters. (sarcasm off).

Because of the high places they grow - with little oxygen and extreme cold - they are thought to be ideal for the project.

Uh, huh. And how do they do without a single drop of water?

Seems to me that bacteria would be the way to start. We could probably duplicate martian conditions in a lab and find something that works.

I predict a Wal-Mart opening within 2 years of planting the trees.

Trees to be grown on Mars

Isn't this like contaminating a pristine environment or something? I mean, we wouldn't like it if they started planting stuff here...

That's how David Gerrold's War Against The Chtorr got started, first an innocuous plant got started, then all of a sudden Earth was innundated with shambler trees and other carniverous plant life, not to mention the man-eating (and anything-else-living-eating) cephalopods that showed up later...

And what's "Annovia"

I believe it is a planet near the Klingon Empire.
