Wireless World: The 'Orange Revolution'

By Gene J. Koprowski Published 12/27/2004 11:41 AM CHICAGO, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- The court-ordered election rematch in Ukraine this past Sunday, featuring opposition presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko and Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych, probably would not have happened were it not for mobile phone technologies. The technologies -- text messaging services in particular -- enabled hundreds of thousands of youthful demonstrators to coordinate their activities and take to the streets of Kiev to contest the November election results, experts told UPI's Wireless World."The most significant aspect of this thing is the mobilization of the population," said Lubomyr Hajda, associate director of Harvard's Ukrainian Research Institute in Cambridge, Mass. "It led to the birth of a civic nation, not an ethnic nation."-- Wireless World is a weekly column examining how mobile telecommunications technologies are transforming society, by Gene J. Koprowski, who covers technology for UPI Science News. E-mail: sciencemail@upi.comCopyright © 2001-2004 United Press International

And it was the lowly fax machine that spread the word about Tiananmen Square protests of 1989.

Indeed, and now we get the truth an hour before we hear the lies.

The truth is easy, good lies take time to craft.

I have been overjoyed to see Ukraine finally emerge from the political swamp that has been its existence since independence from the Soviets. Even though I would like to see Ukraine eventually get into the European Union, I really wouldn't like it to join Nato. Like it or not, Ukrainians can't ignore their relationship with Russia (for better or worse) and joining NATO would be a little too antagonistic toward Russia (who has always suffered from paranoia in one form or another). Alot has to be said of the Ukrainian diaspora (esp. in North America) who have always encouraged their brothers and sisters to march toward freedom. FREEDOM THROUGH TECHNOLOGY

Ukraine should stay away from Nato, EU and Russian empire. Be neutral like biiig Switzerland.
Jumping from one empire to another sucks. Euuuu will fall appart sooner than it took Soviet "paradise" to crumble.
