HOW TO WRITE A SUSAN SONTAG OBITUARY

By Michelle Malkin   ·   December 29, 2004 11:25 AM
Washington Times editor Stacy McCain sends along his newspaper's Susan Sontag obit, which begins:
Novelist, radical Susan Sontag, 71, dies in New York

From combined dispatches

Susan Sontag, a critic, novelist and essayist who blamed America for the September 11 terror attacks and once declared that "the white race is the cancer of human history," died in New York yesterday at age 71.

Read the rest here. And then compare it with the rest of the mainstream media's deifications:

A Rigorous Intellectual Dressed in Glamour

Feminist fighter, dies aged 71

The Intellectual Risk-Taker Died in NY

Indomitable critic silenced by cancer

Liberal bias? What liberal bias?

Update: Dave Huber points to another slavering obit from the Philly Inquirer titled "A celebrity intellectual who provoked, inspired"

And Josh Trevino has an excellent, uh, tribute at Red State.

The only time the words "Includes hot babe pics!" and "Article about Susan Sontag" can go together. Unless we're talking Susan's home decorating habits.

I wonder how many of Reggie White's obits mention his comments about gays. I just heard someone on the radio claim that Reggie's gay comments should be included. Since he was from the NYT, I wonder if he feels the same way about Susan.

Thanks. I listened to a piece on NPR about her and you would think that we had lost the greatest intellectual of the last 100 years.

Now I see that she was just another America-hating, racist Socialist.

I have to say that I haven't paid much attention to Susan Sontag's "ideas," so I didn't know until reading this that she was a socialist dimlib. So this is enlightening; thanks for the post.

Also thanks for the pics of a lovely conservative lady. Michelle Malkin's ideas are worthy of sincere praise.

The irony is that she died of cancer. I guess the "white race" got her in the end :)

Reggie added more to my life than Sontag. And his comments were his honest beliefs. I respected Reggie for his honesty and I wish his family well in their lives and comfort in their grief.

Just what I was thinking.

No doubt that unbiased MSM will include Sontag's "white people are a cancer" quote in their obituaries...NOT!

How to write a Sontag obituary:

1) Eat a big plate of spicy beans

2) Start tape recorder.

3) Transcribe the results....

Obituaries usually mention who the deceased is survived by. With Susan Sontag, no one is mentioned. I guess she was a lesbian.

Quoting the linked Washington Times review ...

At age 17, she married social psychologist Philip Rieff, then 28, just 10 days after meeting him at the University of Chicago. The couple had a son, David, born in 1952, but divorced in the 1960s. In later years, she described her lesbian relationship with photographer Annie Leibowitz as "an open secret."

BINGO!

However, if you follow the link to The Washington Times, you will find it includes this:

At age 17, she married social psychologist Philip Rieff, then 28, just 10 days after meeting him at the University of Chicago. The couple had a son, David, born in 1952, but divorced in the 1960s. Does anyone remember the amazing obituary William Buckley wrote when Bella Abzug died? It was something like: She was a horrible person and will not be missed. Maybe someone from National Review will do a similar one for Sontag.

I love the Tom Wolfe quote:

..Mrs. Sontag is "just another scribbler who spent her life signing up for protest meetings and lumbering to the podium encumbered by her prose style, which had a handicapped parking sticker valid at Partisan Review."

I never thought Sontag was handicapped, I always assumed she was a German who learned english as a second language.

If the white race had got her in the end, she'd have died of colon cancer. :)

She was a babe when she was young. She also wrote a semi-decent book on "camp." But that was four decades ago.

Not a bad shot of her. In most pictures she affects the deadly seriousness of a bi-polar academic. Like I said, she wrote a decent book on one aspect of pop culture -- camp in the early 60s -- and then kind of went off the deep end.
