The New York Times sets the record straight today (December 30, 2004) on the sorry state of US foreign aid in its lead editorial, Are We Stingy? Yes.

Be gone you moronic troll
Well, seeing that it isn't that much, you may as well withhold it.
Troll Alert in Aisle 3
You've got to be kidding! American people will pour in millions of dollars. I dont want the govt to pay a dime.
You won't be here long but it is past time that these countries use their resources to take care of themselves. Full stop.
Here Kitty Kitty
Liberals think its ALL about money. I have news for them. My compassion is not measured or limited by the size of my wallet.
I agree. Perhaps those faith-based initiatives are a better way to use the money.
Often "aid" comes right back to American companies.
Must be the polluted water in Alabama
When the owners, board members, editors, and writers of the New York Times publish their salaries and charitable contributions, I'll be better able to judge whether this editorial is fair criticism of the US or hypocritical BS.
Agreed.
As Davy Crockett said, "It's not yours to give."
Thank you for sharing that.
Victims of the earthquake in Bam, Iran, a year ago are still living in tents because....
they live in a culture that does not seem to support study of concepts like engineering and seismology - and because they live in a geologic hot zone that is prone to substantial earthquakes on a regular basis.
Mr. Bush said yesterday that the $35 million we've now pledged "is only the beginning" of the United States' recovery effort.
How in the world could it have been interpreted by any sentient being as other than "only the beginning"? As he spoke the surveys of damage and casualties were just beginning. Those who wish to criticize the president for not establishing an accurate and final estimate of the required relief roughly 48 hours after the disaster - have an obligation to name the precise figure that they believe is knowable and have themselves judged by the accuracy of that number. Otherwise, we would have to believe that they are the bitching, carping, whiners who simply do not like the Bush administration and will use any excuse, even this tragedy, to criticize them.
Sooooooo, what say you about this?
How much is your Alabama Fudge Packing Union going to give?
If you mean American companies that are providing relief services in infrastructure rebuilding so what?
Please don't knock Alabama. We voted by nearly 70% for Bush. This guy is a jerk and should have been partial birth aborted.
Liberals are with money as monkeys are with feces. The scream, jump around and throw it everywhere. It is their nature.

Who else but a liberal would quote the NY Times as a reliable source?
No it doesn't, only YOUR version of the truth matters. Anything contradicting that truth is simply disregarded or hand waved away. Sure, we here are prone to do that sort of thing too, hey, its the way it works, but dont kid yourself, you are a rat, you just choose to follow a different piper.
Sometimes it helps the country more if you use the people and supplies that are in the country.
You gotta see this.
Hey, we signed over the check to the Mullahs running the government in Tehran. Just because the money was last seen spilling across the roulette tables in Monte Carlo doesn't mean it's our fault it never got to the tent people. Ask your neighborhood Mullah where the money went.
Christian right's compassion deficit
I think he's trying to tell us something...
Florida and our Gulf Coast suffered through some devastating hurricanes this past year. We've also seen our share of floods, tornadoes, fires, and the like. What kind of financial aid did we receive from foreign countries?
Right, that has worked out real well in the past. If we send taxpayer money over there I want it spent the same way we would spend it here. I am sick and tired of countries that have tremendous nattural resources and unlimited labor pools that can't get into the 19th century much less the 21st and then demand that those that have bail the out..
I would love to get in this in person
Hey Butt-Dart.
Are you going to personally pay the payroll for the 7th Fleet that is in the Indian Ocean and the Aircrews that are going to drop food and supplies?
You going to count the 5,000 sailors on the Enterprise?
We spent more than was announced before it was announced asswipe.
The ONLY way that the world will realize what they have is by NOT HAVING IT! You don't realize what you had until you lose it as the saying goes!
Therefore the US should CUT ALL FOREIGN AID COMPLETELY OFF!! Then they will know what they DON"T HAVE. We could use the money here at home while we rethink the amount and to whom our generosity should go to.
Smell this one.
King, I didn't ask if he was a teenage boy or not. Sorry.
Hmmm, sure looks that way.
Well, cfhBAMA? I await your reply.
Melanie - How much are YOU donating?
I guess none of these people realize the President can only volunteer so much before getting it approved by congress -- who happens to be on vacation right now. As commander in chief he was able to send the military to help... and he did -- and I heard there is a slush fund he can spend without approval -- but over a certain amount has to have approval... they are complaining about the money he got for Florida -- BUT he had congress approve those billions and no one helped us out but the USA -- in other words we had to help ourself -- I didn't hear a word from the UN except this was our fault because of Global Warming.
And this liberal thinks the US should be funding the world -- one world, utopian fool -- should have been on the Clinton advisory board....such as it was. God help us.
My goodness you're awaken a lot of people! LOL
So you get to decide how much to donate, even knowing that we probably will give more as a nation, and the donations from private citizens are still coming?
The spirit of charity is now how much you give, but the act of giving itself.
Go watch fuhba'.
COMMENT: This is what we should be hearing from all our media. As a "reality based" person, truth matters to me. I'd love to believe that the $35 million we're giving is a huge and generous sum, as Fox News would have me think. But when put into perspective, it's a shameful pittance. Tell me the truth. I can handle it. I just wish the media and George W. Bush could.
ROFL. That's a term I haven't heard in years.
We haven't given enough? Okay,YOU cough up every cent you have stashed away in your piggy bank, newbie.
And FYI..........when disaster hits the USA,not a single other nation EVER has sent us any money or help of any kind.
Can we flame this DUtard?
DfM, I giggled when i saw it too. That was so 3rd grade...just like the DUmmie mentality that started this thread.
How much aid did the world send to Florida or to NYC on 911?
Scorch his tailfeathers.

BE GONE TROLL!
According to NPR (a very reliable source), the United States spent 40% of all worldwide charitable giving last year.
"Bush announced his Millennium Challenge account to give African countries development assistance of up to $5 billion a year, but the account has yet to disperse a single dollar."
Good! The Bush administration wants to make sure that our taxpayer dollars will not wind up in a Swiss bank account of some pos third world dictator. I am sure we would donate more money if there was some way to ensure that the assistance funds would actually be used for what they were intended for.
Why would we give any money to anyone in Iran if they are building nuclear weapons to destroy our country? Every resource the Iranian government has to spend on something other that their weapons program slows their progress toward building the bomb.
