Brazil Town to Honor Arafat With Statue

SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) - The New Year's Eve celebrations in the small community of Paraiba do Sul will honor a figure the town's mayor says hasn't been honored anywhere else in the West - the late Yasser Arafat.

Moments before the clock rings in 2005, a fireworks and light show will serve as a backdrop to the unveiling of a life-sized statue of the Palestinian leader holding the traditional symbol of peace, the olive branch.

The 5-foot, 7-inch bronze statue will be part of an open-air memorial that includes a marble map of Palestine and a replica of the Palestinian flag, also in marble, Paraiba do Sul Mayor Rogerio Onofre said.

"It is the first time a memorial in Arafat's honor has been built in the Western world," Onofre said.

"We decided to build the memorial to demonstrate our solidarity with the Palestinian cause," Onofre said by phone. "We hope the memorial will encourage people to discuss the Middle Eastern crisis, which is the cause of all the violence and turmoil afflicting the world today."

man-o-man, I just wish Mr. A-Fat was in better health to attend the DEMS CONVENTION. Imagine the three stooges: A-FAT, JIM-AY, and MIKEY co-sharing DEMS guest of honor spot!!

Tell me a life-size statue in Brazil of Mike Moore-on is slated NEXT!

Bronze statues are not cheap. Small towns like Paraiba do Sul normally do not have a lot of money, and probably have more pressing concerns like sanitation, law and order, road maintenance, water and electricity and so on. So the question is: who TF is going to pay for it?

I'm sure a US congressman threw that in the budget somewhere... statue in Brazil: around $25,000

Well, in the United States a life size bronze with some marble work as mentioned would be more like 250K, not 25. I doubt that an US congressman would outsource a pork project to Brazil.

We have both Che Guevara's Latin Marxism legacy and Islamism to thank for this new insult to humanity. May this statute soon be dragged through the streets like Saddam's was.

I'm not surprised at all that the Brazilians would do this.

I lived in Sao Paulo for 2 years. They hate Bush worse than the rats here do. They think that Saddam, Fidel, and Kim-Jong mentally ill are misunderstood and are good, compassionate leaders.

I was in Brazil on 9/11 and most people there thought 9/11 was a good thing because we needed to be humbled and taken down a notch. They thought that God was working through the terrorists to smite us for our "crimes" against the world.

After Saddam is executed, look for a Saddam statue in Brazil.
