Senator Says Lifetime Terror Detentions 'Bad Idea'(RINO Alert!)

A reported U.S. plan to keep some suspected terrorists imprisoned for a lifetime even if the government lacks evidence to charge them in courts was swiftly condemned on Sunday as a "bad idea" by a leading Republican senator. The Pentagon and the CIA have asked the White House to decide on a more permanent approach for those it was unwilling to set free or turn over to U.S. or foreign courts, the Washington Post said in a report that cited intelligence, defense and diplomatic officials.

Some detentions could potentially last a lifetime, the newspaper said.

Influential senators denounced the idea as probably unconstitutional.

"It's a bad idea. So we ought to get over it and we ought to have a very careful, constitutional look at this," Republican Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee said on "Fox News Sunday."

Do these people realize we are in a war to the death with Islamic fundamentalism? If so, who's side are they on? If not, they need to resign.

I guess Lugar is next in line--he's now described as a "leading Republican," which is how they used to describe McCain and Spector, who now get the full-name treatment.

Funny how they never call Zell Miller a leading democrat.

Yes, I noticed that "leading Republican senator" phrase too. Leading in what way? Access to the MSM?

I think he can be called "leading" because he is Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Well, one should look at his words with the open mind. He is understandably unhappy with the idea of lifetime detention; maybe one could settle for shortened lifetimes?

I'm all for rounding up terrorists and putting them away for good. Just beware the law of unintended consequences. I can visualize this being used by a future Dem administration to lock up abortion protesters, RKBA advocates, and a host of others.

Don't set any precedents you don't want used against you.

are those abortion protestors Saudis, captured in Pakistan? you have to differentiate cases like Padilla - from foreign terrorists captured on the battlefield overseas. the cases are different.

This is why you kill terrorists. You never give them a chance to surrender, you just kill them with overwhelming force.

If you can't detain them the only other answer is take no prisnors. Kill all of them caught in the act of terrorism or taking up arms against the United States.

if the US courts get jurisdiction over them - and they are permitted to have full criminal trials and rules of evidence, and US juries where you can't exclude muslims or liberals, they will go free.

Exactally which is why I say use overwhelming force and kill terrorists rather then take them prisnor.

Lugar is an ass.

Does he think we can rehabilitate muslims?
Teach them... what? A useful trade or skill?

How about teaching them a new religion - does he think we can do that?
In how many years?

Doesn't he realize how humanitarian we're being?
At any other time in history, mankind would have moved swiftly to exterminate the verminous adherents to Islam just as we'd use DDT to exterminate disease-carrying mosquitoes.

There should be no CITIZEN of the united states held for life on SUSPICION of terror charges, they should be tried and sentenced appropriately, but forigners who are suspected of terrorism is a whole other story.

"I can visualize this being used by a future Dem administration to lock up abortion protesters, RKBA advocates, and a host of others."

You know what?
Any time abortion protesters or gun owners start flying airliners into office buildings and beheading innocents, I wouldn't have a problem with that!

well, in some cases, you want to take leadership targets alive if possible. they are valuable for questioning. and I might be inclined to let the foreign fighters have military tribunals, but the rules of evidence, in comparison to US criminal trials, would have to be much lower.

still, I think this lifetime detainment idea is something they only want to apply to the top AQ leaders captured: KSM, Zubayda, Bin-Alsheeb, etc. What do you do with these guys now?
