What is worse is having children with the expectation that they are going to come visit you, and do not.

After working in a nursing home for a period of time, I would suggest that is in some ways more painful.

Also, there are a wide variety of reasons that married couples do not have children, and not all of them have to do with finances or responsibility issues.

Don't you agree that there are some people who you wish had thought a bit harder about whether they were suited to raising children or not?

It seems to me the dichotomy in society is growing. I don't have kids so I am not sure how this works but most of my friends who do, have their whole lives wrapped up in their kids. I can't tell you how many Christmas cards I have with their kids on them. You know I really don't care.

Then there is the other extreme in our culture. Work, career, 24-7. I don't mind talking business occasionally after hours but I mean geez, I really don't care who's at what firm and who got to try what case.

On the other hand, my one friend has his whole life wrapped up in his boat. There's a guy with priorities.

That's not for me to decide. For my own case, I have four children. I am praying that I have good daughter and son-in-laws. I am preparing for my emotional future. I want more than anything to be the type of person others will want to be around when I am old and feeble. Others can do what they wish. I, on the other hand, want to be surrounded by family on my deathbed.
