Shrewd spending boosted GOP in presidential race
The Seattle Times ^ | 1/3/2005 | Thomas B. Edsall and James V. Grimaldi

WASHINGTON — In the most expensive presidential contest in the nation's history, John Kerry and his Democratic supporters nearly matched President Bush and the Republicans, who outspent them by only $60 million, $1.14 billion to $1.08 billion.

But despite their fund-raising success, Democrats simply did not spend their money as effectively as Bush. That is the conclusion of an extensive examination of campaign fund-raising and spending data provided by the Federal Election Commission, the Internal Revenue Service and interviews with officials of the two campaigns and the independent groups allied with them.

In a $2.2 billion election, two relatively small expenditures by Bush and his allies stand out for their impact: the $546,000 ad buy by Swift Boat Veterans for Truth and the Bush campaign's $3.25 million contract with the firm TargetPoint Consulting.

What cracks me up is that in a 2 billion race, the republicans spent only $60 million more, but the dems from McAuliffe on down will be saying "We were outspent by those rich Republicans." Awwwwwww! Poor babies, only able to raise over $1 billion!

Ain't it funny? The loser-libs just cannot face why they lost the election...they are blaming anyone and everything other than their Marxist, liberal ways.

Let them just keep thinking that way -- works for me!!!!

the Bush campaign's $3.25 million contract with the firm TargetPoint Consulting.

I'm not familiar with this firm. What did they do that the name being singled out?

The real problem in the Kerry campaign was the delegation of registering new voters was given to the 527 groups. It is very hard for Democrats to get enough volunteers to register new voters.

Rank and File Democrats look to Government and the Democratic party to do things for them. They do not expect to do things for the Democratic party. So the 527s hired people to register new Democrats. The problem was the people hired to register new democrats were paid 10 dollars per person registered. It has been proven that it takes about 50 in person calls to register one new voter. A hired person working his or her rump off could register about 3 or 4 people a day.. Earning a gross of 30 to 40 dollars....less than minimum wage.

The hired help quickly figured out they could use city directories and phone books along with the registred voter lists to "manufacture" new Democratic voters. Many were turning in up to a 100 new registrations a day earning up to a thousand dollars a day. Some precincts in Ohio ended up with more "Registered" voters than the census numbers said lived in the precinct.

The Kerry camp believed these fake registrtions were real and those people would vote on election day. The Exit pollsters believed those registration numbers too.

The Bush campaign was well aware of the fake Democratic registrations. I was asked as a volunteer to document the fake registrations in Pike County Ohio. The Bush campaign was afraid that Kerry would have real people show up and pretend to be the fake people registered. There was a fear that the Kerry campaign was going to use these fake names to vote. But on election day no one showed up to vote the fake names the 527s had registered.

For example in Ohio precincts that had no fake registrations voted between 68 and 72 percent of registered voters. In precincts where Democratic 527s had registered lots of voters the turn out was in the low to mid 40s.

Late into election night the Media and the Kerry camp kept expecting the big city precincts to come in with huge turnouts for Kerry. But as they surely knew by early morning the people the 527s had hired to register all those new voters, had simply ripped Soros and others off.

What made the Bush people aware of the situation was many of the hired Demoratic registrars were turning in up to a hundred new registrations a day. That was impossible. Working 18 hour days a person would have been lucky to turn in 4 or 5 new voters.

The Bush campaign on the other hand used Volunteers to register new Republican voters. Those of us that did so were paid nothing. The bush campaign had paid staffers ensure the registrations the volunteers turned in were valid.

Both the Bush and Kerry campaigns kept track of how many new voters they were registering. The irony was the Bush campaign knew evert Republican voter they registered was real, the Bush campaign also knew a large number of the Democrat Voters registered were fake.... apparently the Democrats did not know until the votes were counted that they had been ripped off.

I find the idea that the Repubs and Bush outspent the Dems.... suspect.

I remember when you called this fact before the voting, CT...

That's a wonderful and interesting account, CT. It's always great to get first-hand reports from those who were "on the ground." And there's no doubt that Ohio was Ground Zero for this election.

In addition to being a highly partisan Republican/conservative, I'm fascinated by the mechanics of the electoral process. I miss Theodore White's series of The Making of the President books, and I look forward to reading whatever retrospectives of Election '04 come out, because it was a fascinating race irrespective of the outcome.

I bring your post to the attention of a couple of folks who might be interested.

That was the direct spending by the parties. I think that liberal special interests definitely spent more money that conservative special interests, but I don't think that this was factored in these figures.
I swear for two months before the election, almost every commercial was political and 80% of them were for liberal causes or Democrat candidates, but this is was in Washington State and it was considered a "battleground".

I think that you are right. I work in Downtown Seattle. While out on lunch walks, I would approached 4 out of 5 days to register or "Help Defeat President Bush". When I told them that I was already registered they basically said so what and wanted me to register again. When I told them that I wouldn't and I was a Republican, they immediately lost interest...Kind of interesting.

I really don't think that this included all the liberal 527 money and other monies raised/spent by liberal groups. I don't know about you, but for a while, it seemed like Bush was going to go down in defeat based on the shear money spent by the libs/Democrats against Bush and all Republicans.

That's a good point. I have a feeling no dems will be asking for a correction on this matter, though--that would take away their victim status which they so love.

Without the victim status...their position is greatly diminished as they cannot argue their points on a rational basis. Their arguments are all based on emotion and feelings. It takes a conservative to put a realistic perspective on just about anything being discussed.

This is typical. The Dems took the same approach towards the election that they take with most other situations: They thought all they had to do was throw enough money at the "problem" in order to achieve the desired results. It STILL has not occurred to them that the reason they lost is because the majority of voters in this country are not buying what they are trying to sell.

I wouldn't have a big a deal if they were throwing their money at the problem. The problem is that they have these "deficits" because they can't seem to spend prudently and then they have to raise taxes on the middle class. This is why it is really rare to find many fiscally sound politicians of either party. They like to spend other people's money....
