Somewhere out there is a thief with a very hot gun -- that of Seattle police Chief Gil Kerlikowske.
Sometime between 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Dec. 26, someone broke into Kerlikowske's department vehicle, a Ford Crown Victoria, parked at Sixth Avenue and Olive Way, and stole his Glock 9 mm handgun.
"It's an embarrassing thing to have happened, but officers can certainly be burglarized and have their weapon stolen. It happens," police spokeswoman Debra Brown said yesterday.
Kerlikowske had left the gun hidden in his car, Brown said. He reported the theft Dec. 28, within the 72 hours allowed by policy.

there are a lot of wandering shreds of humanity in that neighborhood since Seattle Libs provide all kinds of services right in the center of the downtown and tourist area. So now you have some nicely equipped wandering shred..in some shelter with a loaded Glock. If he was dump enough to leave it in the car..it probably was loaded.

Cops are always leaving their cars running with all sorts of ordnance inside. I see it all the time.

I've always thought 'Gun control is...' ended with 'hitting your target' Now I guess it is 'keeping control of your gun.'

Judging by the way I've seen some officers shoot at the range, this doesn't surprise me.

This reminds me of the time when the chief in Madison WI had his gun discharge in his oven where he had put it to dry it off. This was about 5 years go. Chief Williams has since moved to a more arid climate.

Now that couldn't happen in Portland, Maine because Portland, Maine's police chief, one mikey chitty chitty bangwood, doesn't carry a gun. Carries a purse, but not a gun.

Cops are always leaving their cars running with all sorts of ordnance inside. I see it all the time.Me too...and I can guarantee you that if I left my car running, they would give me a ticket. We just had a 90-100 MPH car chase in a 40 MPH zone through San Antonio a few days ago when a perp stole a cop car. It scared the crap out of me as I was right at the intersection where he was heading and there were so many speeding cops in the area that everyone was panicking, not knowing which way to go to avoid them.

It seems the chief was caught in a situation many states require permit holder to be in.
Permit holders around the country know the inconvenience, frustration and safety issues involved when entering a criminal entriprise zone when one is required to leave their weapon in the car.
One wonders if this has dawned yet on the police chief?

I'll bet the Seattle Chief OP left his weapon in the car because he didn't want to carry it into some particular place on Christmas eve.
This is also now a pending matter of real concern to a lot of folks, including those with concealed weapon permits. What the gun control crowd is now legislating is a ban of weapons in a myriad of places. I walked into a US Post Office yesterday and was greeted by a big sign saying "No weapons allowed under penalty of federal law."
All public schools are also off-limits -- even their parking lots. Most government (federal, state, and local) buildings are off-limits, as are bars and many restaurants. A lot of businesses now say their employees can't carry weapons into their structures or even left in locked cars in their parking lots.
This isn't to say that a policeman is prohibited from carrying, but citizens are now being systematically prohibited under threat of a felony to carry into many, many places, even if they have a valid concealed weapon permit.
A big fight is now transpiring in Oklahoma, where the Whirlpool Corporation filed a suit claiming their right to ban employees from having weapons on their person, or in their parking lots. Boeing has done this for years. The NRA is helping to take the OK law to court but not before several employees were fired.

Perhaps the chief's last name should be Wiggum instead.
