I just doubt the Sirius show will be successful. He won't have any envelopes to push. Being the maverick he was made the show appealing. You had to ask yourself, what is he going to do next?

But he did (single-handedly change the election)

NY/NJ went for Kerry instead of Bush ...

Heh.

Fortunately for America, NY/NJ is not America.

Fortunately for America, America is not NY/NJ.

Fortunately for America, Howard is impotent in national politics.

Which makes my point about baiting puritans.

If the puritans can just restrain themselves (like that ever happened), he will fade away. If they respond to his taunts with self rightous anger he will thrive. I predict he thrives.

Stern's show was VERY funny fifteen years ago (or maybe I was just much more easily amused back then?). The show was more free-form, a real train wreck that drew you in. You never knew where he was going with something, or what his take would be. He seemed to get more and more formulaic and predictable over time, until he became pretty much unlistenable soft-porn a few years back. I would tune in from time to time to see if anything had gotten any better. Nothin' doin'. From what little I've heard, I agree that he hit rock bottom after his divorce and parting with Jackie. IMO, yet another case of a performer whose audience grows up, while he can't (or won't).

Growth is a bit more important.

No, it doesn't matter how big you are if you can't turn a profit. US Air is bigger than AirTran or JetBlue, but either of the latter is a far better investment than US Air. On rare occasion, it is a legitimate business practice to sacrifice earnings on a short term basis to buy market share, but the dot com experience proved that ignoring profits is a sure path to oblivion.

The FCC will follow Howie to satellite radio.

Gee Howard, ya think maybe your employers don't want you talking about the competition? And if you're going to do that, you're going to get yanked? Yeah, that's the way the world works.

He could have just told his listeners to go to his website to look at topless photos and then put up ads on the website for satellite radio. But he had to go on FM and tell people not to listen to FM... there's a lesson there.

I predict he will fade away into obscurity leaving the burning, bankrupt hulk of Sirus to be absorbed into XM regardless of what the puritans say or do.

Sounds like a child who has set out to discover his limits,
and then pouts when he finds them.

The only thing more contemptible than Stern himself seems
to be his die-hard fans. I've witnessed their fake victim
calls to newshows during disasters.

Me, I'm going to start tuning him in now and getting used to "Bowling for V.D."

I haven't seen him in a long time. Has he switched from the lesbian spanking format?

How many people are so desperate to hear stern they would pay to hear him?

Then again it might be very funny if the audience moves to conservative talk stations.

I think Billy West's departure was the point it stopped being funny!

The sad thing is, Stern has an excellent comic mind when he works and thinks.

The NFL package did that and it will continue to be the strong performer. Stern has turned into Imus without the listener funded ranch. His schtick will wear and his contract will be a drag on Sirius within 2 years. Of course, Karmazin will be his enabler, just like he was at Infinity/Viacom.

Congrats on doubling your money, but don't get confused as to how it happened.

He was supposed to single handedly change the election

I almost forgot about that. All his drug-addled, self-abusing, porn-addict fans were supposed to listen to their "king" and show up en-masse at the polls to defeat Bush.

I guess Stern will just have to join Moore, Franken, Stewart, and Soros in the club of arrogant SOBs who were defeated by the real America in 2004.

He'll have so much freedom he won't know what to do with it.

Just like after his marriage broke up, and he was free to date, it just wasn't the same. When you make your career out of pushing the envelope, what do you do when there no longer is an envelope to push?

Good point--Billy's departure was a real shock. He was also different from the others on the show, neither a kissass nor an antagonist, more like a satellite that floated through Howard's universe. I think Howard respected him, whereas he had little respect for Jackie other than his ability to write jokes.

It is sad he has to be put in that category. He was a staunch proponent of Bush's policies. Then he lost it w/ the FCC and started his jihad against the "religious right"
