Commercial success is not the primary criteria for merit awards. If that's your criteria then the two best films of last year were 'Shrek 2' and 'Spiderman 2', both of which made more money then The Passion. The Passion has all the makings of what Hollywood would deem a perfect movie -- its subject is flawed for them and thats all. If this movie had been about something more accepting -- still had the beatiful imagery, subtitles, and blockbuster profits it'd be #1. Its an artists movie.

I haven't seen the movie. Don't know anything about it really. My only point was that judging an actor by the morality of the character he is playing is not wise. Actors pretend they are someone else for a living.

'The Last Temptation of Christ' wasn't nominated for a Best Picture Oscar either and no one claimed that was a sign of Hollywood's inherent conservatism.

Except 'The Last Temptation' was a steaming pile of dung.

Drew68, The name of the movie was The Passion of the Christ. It was not about the Life of Christ.

It really doesn't matter what the shallow anti-Jesus hollywood types think about this film. The fact that it has and will continue to make an eternal life-changing impact for millions of people is much more important. Mel can store up his treasures in heaven...I'm sure the Academy Awards will not make it there.

Tin-plated dictators and pedophiles movies get awards from Hollyweird, but a movie that made more money then all those films combined and shock Hollyweird to its core, they ignore as it was nothing.

The morals of Hollyweird couldn't be any more clear then seeing this snub as Mel Gibson and his incredibly successful film, The Passion of the Christ. It's obvious, Hollyweird adores EVIL and hates GOOD.

Mel, I'm sure you know many many people appreciate your talent. You don't need junk awards from Hollyweird to tell you that you are one of the best film makers of our time.

P.S. Mad Max 4 please :) Make it more like The Road Warrior, not Beyond Thunderdom.

For my money, the greatest film about a Passion of sorts is 'The Passion of Joan of Arc' it can bring about religious feeling in the lowest heathen.

IMO, The Passion of the Christ was a great movie, and I am not a Christian. I can see how Hollyweird won't appreciate the movie on a "philosophical level," but if they cannot appreciate it artistically, then they truly are hypocrites. If the AFI can list "Birth of Nation" as one the best 100 films of the 20th century, then they should able to acknowledge the beauty in the Passion. Maia Morgernstern & cinematographer Caled Deschanel, at the very least, should be nominated for Oscars for their breathtaking work.

Incidentally, I lost all respects for the Academy Awards after Kevin Costner's PC-drenched Dances With Wolves beat out Scorsese's magisterial Goodfellas for top honors in 1991.

That, and the fact that Hitchcock never won, shows what a joke the award is.
