Atheist Sues to Thwart Inauguration Prayer (Newdow)

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - An atheist who sued because he did not want his young daughter exposed to the words "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance has filed a suit to bar the saying of a prayer at President Bush's inauguration.

Michael Newdow notes that two ministers delivered Christian invocations at Bush's first inaugural ceremony in 2001, and that plans call for a minister to do the same before Bush takes the oath of office Jan. 20.

In a lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, Newdow says the use of a prayer is unconstitutional. The case is tentatively scheduled Jan. 14.

Last year, the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals tossed the same lawsuit, saying Newdow did not suffer "a sufficiently concrete and specific injury." But the decision did not bar him from filing the challenge in a different circuit.

Newdow is best known for trying to remove "under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance.

He won that case more than two years ago before a federal appeals court, which said it was an unconstitutional blending of church and state for public school students to pledge to God.

In June, however, the Supreme Court said Newdow could not lawfully sue because he did not have custody of his elementary school-aged daughter, on whose behalf he sued, and because the girl's mother objected to the suit.

Newdow refiled the pledge suit in Sacramento federal court this week, naming eight other plaintiffs who are custodial parents or the children themselves.

Yes, and thank you for mentioning it. This a## clown does not represent ME or any other atheist I know.

He ought to sign up for a 'reality' show on TV and stop using taxpayer funded courts for his 15 minutes of fame. I choose NOT to watch 'reality' shows because I already spend 7.5 hours a day, 5 days a week with immature 20-50 year olds. Perhaps I should sue him for imposing himself on my personal time, LOL.

and then I hope Bush says at the inaguration,
"its time to ignore and impeach the radical judge(s) who agree with the idiot"

I hope before that he tells the Park Service where to go.

Park Service says NO CROSSES at Inauguration.

It's not the Park Service, it's the Secret Service.
If Bush can't or wont do something about this, we have a real problem.

Show me how often--and in what context in Scripture the terms tolerance, tolerate are used.I acknowledge atheism
I can never be tolerant of that which is against God.

He needs to be put out of his misery. Let's all chip in and give him a one-way trip to Cuba! He would find no mention of God and could live out his sad little life in peace.

You can put a cross on a sign. A cross could be used as a weapon.

Now, while other religious symbols are not on the list there, I presume they would also ban menorah's or stars of david etc.

If that is the case, I have no problem with it. Anything that could be used as a weapon needs to be carefully controlled.

Why do you presume that?

He should run for President on the "I am so perfect that nothing can be greater than I" party. When he wins (LOL), he can forbid prayer everywhere.

Are you referring to the LP?

Why would they list them to a Christian group?

"Are you referring to the LP?"

The LIBELtarians know when I am talking about them.

Why would they list them to a Christian group?

Maybe I'm mistaken, but isn't this letter from The Secret Service to the Park Service?
If so, why is a Christian symbol singled out?
If they're worried about the Ku Klux Klan, maybe I could understand it,
but is the Klan planning on marching in the Inaugural Parade?
I doubt it. Christian symbols are under attack all across the nation,
in case you haven't noticed. I think this is just one more instance.
Coming from an agency so close to Bush is doubly troubling. Bush had better address it.

oops. Right. Well, hmm. I thought it was a letter to a Christian group wanting permits, but sure enough, it is to the park service. Beats me.
