"This whole area was littered with commercialism," said the 43-year-old from Maui, Hawaii. "There were hundreds of beach chairs out here. I prefer the sand."

“The lawn chairs, the fat Germans, the dirty beggars – all gone! My view is so unspoiled now. It’s a dream come true!”

"Natural state" = poverty for the locals but this clown doesn't seem to care.

Good heavens. I'm reminded of some of the extremely graphic pictures of flotsam and jetsam containing human bodies.

Yeah, what is he doing there, jogging on that pristine beach, killing all those tiny sea animals that burrow into the pristine sand with his disgusting human, smelly feet!

I guess he'll just leap gaily over any dead bodies that may float in with the tides, just nature doing it's beautiful thing. Meanwhile the vendors die of starvation, but what the heck, that's just the nature of nature too, right?

"This whole area was littered with commercialism," said the 43-year-old from Maui, Hawaii. "

""Everyone is talking about it. It looks much better now," he said. "This looks a lot more like Hawaii now, where vendors aren't allowed on the beach."

Why didn't he just keep his gluteus maximus in Hawaii, if that's what he wanted to see and experience? Hundreds of thousands of people died and he can only complain about the "natural beauty"....how callous!

excellent point re: "other people" spoiling nature.

by the way, this whole article reminds me of one of the best Talking Heads songs (both for lyrics and a great instrumental segment) called: "(Nothing but) Flowers"

(Nothing But) Flowers Lyrics

Here we stand
Like an Adam and an Eve
Waterfalls
The Garden of Eden
Two fools in love
So beautiful and strong
The birds in the trees
Are smiling upon them

From the age of the dinosaurs
Cars have run on gasoline
Where, where have they gone?
Now, it's nothing but flowers

There was a factory
Now there are mountains and rivers
you got it, you got it

We caught a rattlesnake
Now we got something for dinner
we got it, we got it

There was a shopping mall
Now it's all covered with flowers
you've got it, you've got it

If this is paradise
I wish I had a lawnmower
you've got it, you've got it

Years ago
I was an angry young man
I'd pretend
That I was a billboard
Standing tall
By the side of the road
I fell in love
With a beautiful highway

This used to be real estate
Now it's only fields and trees
Where, where is the town
Now, it's nothing but flowers

The highways and cars
Were sacrificed for agriculture
I thought that we'd start over
But I guess I was wrong

Once there were parking lots
Now it's a peaceful oasis
you got it, you got it

This was a Pizza Hut
Now it's all covered with daisies
you got it, you got it

I miss the honky tonks,
Dairy Queens, and 7-Elevens
you got it, you got it

And as things fell apart
Nobody paid much attention
you got it, you got it

I dream of cherry pies,
Candy bars, and chocolate chip cookies
you got it, you got it

We used to microwave
Now we just eat nuts and berries
you got it, you got it

This was a discount store,
Now it's turned into a cornfield
you got it, you got it

Don't leave me stranded here
I can't get used to this lifestyle

"They were just building and building and building. It was too much. You couldn't even walk around," said Moriel Avital, a 24-year-old Israeli who lived on the island for four months. "It was all gone in one wave — it's telling people not to mess with nature," she said. "Paradise should be paradise and should not become this civilized."

This bitch pisses me off almost as much as the Hawaiian jackass.

She moves her fat ass to this beautiful island, presumably living and working in buildings. Within four months of her arrival, she’s lamenting the fact that people build buildings there in which self-absorbed jerkwads can live.

I’ll bet my life savings that her precious building wasn’t one of the ones washed away. For some reason, her’s isn’t spoiling paradise, it’s just a nice place to live.

Reminds me of an old line I heard from a former boss at HUD:

I define an environmentalist as a guy who bought his cabin in the woods yesterday.

O man I agree-

"Well the bad news is we lost 400,00 people. Half of them kids... The good news is- we now have a lot of job openings for urban planners!"

"Wow, the beach has been returned to nature," said the yuppie, as he hopped in his SUV to ride home and cook some steaks in his gas grill on the newly built redwood deck.

We lived on the ocean and saw hotels, motels, going up on the beach. My mother always said: "The Ocean will come back to claim its own."

Because he is displaying his "sensitivity" through secular piety. If you can show you care about the enviroment more than anyone else you are seen as "holier" than your friends.

Sounds like some people are concerned about "other people" creating overdevelopment and destroying a site's natural beauty --but they don't really consider their own part in the overdevelopment. If you think a natural place is getting too crowded, do your part and DON'T GO THERE.

Sounds to me like you have never been there. A lot of the beaches in Thailand have gotten jam packed with umbrellas and chairs. This makes it very difficult to get to the beach because you have to find a break in the chairs to get through to the sand and water. The chairs and umbrellas are owned by shops that have their location right across from the beach and in other cases by vendors directly on the beach. I am in complete agreement with this guy. It is about time they are gone. One of the few good things to come out of the tsunami.
