WASHINGTON (AP) - Hillary Clinton's former campaign fund-raising director is indicted in Los Angeles.

AP-NY-01-07-05 1651EST

WASHINGTON (AP) - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's former finance director has been indicted on charges of causing false campaign finance reports to be filed with the Federal Election Commission, the Justice Department said Friday.

The indictment of David Rosen, unsealed in Los Angeles, focuses on his fund-raising for an Aug. 12, 2000, gala for Clinton in Los Angeles. The New York Democrat was still first lady at the time.

While the event allegedly cost more than $1.2 million, the indictment said, Rosen reported contributions of about $400,000, knowing the figure to be false.

The indictment charged that Rosen provided some documents to the an FEC compliance officer but withheld the true costs of the event and provided false documents to substantiate the lower figure.

In one instance, Rosen obtained and delivered a fraudulent invoice stating the cost of a concert associated with the gala was $200,000 when he know that figure was false, according to the indictment. The actual cost of the concert was more than $600,000.

Each of the four counts of making a false statement carries a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison and up to $250,000 in fines upon conviction.

Ickes will come down eventually. He's problematic to the system because anytime he's asked a question with legal standing, his reply is "Go F$@% Yourself". It makes for interesting drama, slows things down, but eventually paves the way to doom.

Vince Foster was Hillary's consigliere too. Ickes knows that and at some point will go into hiding or undergo bypass operations to keep him from getting into the Fort Marcy Hotel.

Hillary will, of course, feign surprise, shock and grave concern at the news. She's remarkably good at not knowing what her own people are up to, just as she is ignorant of the contents of her bedroom.

My impression was she also risks being indicted as she too was implicated by Mr. Paul (?). Last I read, she and hubby had appealed for a dismissal and their request was denied. Crossing fingers that David Rosen is not alone in a cell.

The FBI says Rosen has been named by indicted businessman Peter Paul, who alleges Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, defrauded him in connection with a Hollywood fund-raiser, most of which he says he financially underwrote.

The gala took place in August 2000 on the eve of the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles. Billed as a tribute to outgoing President Clinton, the event also brought in much-needed cash for Hillary's campaign. Prosecutors say Paul was looking for a pardon from President Clinton at the time.

Lawyers for the senator and her aide say Clinton and Rosen did nothing wrong.

"New York Senate 2000 properly reported all donations in 2000," Clinton attorney David Kendell said, according to Fox.

"From my review of all the facts, I am convinced that Mr. Rosen has done nothing improper. To the contrary, he has done everything right," Paul Mark Sandler, Rosen's attorney, is quoted as saying.

A 2002 FBI affidavit unsealed this summer says the Clinton campaign understated the amount it spent on the Hollywood event to make cash available for "federal campaign activities."

"The event's costs exceeded $1 million, but the required forms filed by New York Senate 2000 ... months after the event incorrectly disclosed that the cost of the event was only $523,000," the affidavit reads. "It appears that the true cost of the event was deliberately understated in order to increase the amount of funds available to New York Senate 2000 for federal campaign activities."

Fox reports Paul said in an interview recorded by the FBI in 2001 that Rosen worked in Paul's office for one month putting together the Hollywood party. According to Paul, Rosen watched him write checks totaling about $1.5 million to pay for the gala.

Had this been Karl Rove, the press would be going apoplectic about now. I can hear Hiltery and her shills now, "This is just the politics of personal destruction", "How dare the RNC seek out a political indictment when men and women are dying in Iraq", "This was a simple accounting error. It pales in comparison to Abu Ghraib", "Blah, blah, blah."
