Major Web Host Down?
NA | 01/07/2005 | Martin at Blogbat

Posted on 01/07/2005 8:05:04 PM PST by blogbat

Hosting Matters, the webhost for Little Green Footballs, Wizbang! and others including blogbat’s future home has been down for an unspecified period of time and just recently started seeing a return of some of its sites to the web.

Hosting Matters’ own home page was also currenly down for a time. No announcements of mantainemnce or news of serious weather in the area have been reported in local news or made available to its users. It instead simply appears to be an unplanned event.

Hosting Matters maintains its web servers in Jacksonville, FL USA. An e-mail has been sent to HM to find out why the servers went offline. I’m currently awaiting a response or announcement. The hosts main page has now returned to the web, along with Wizbang!, but Little Green Footballs and others have not yet returned.

I think it's a new virus spreading out over the net. Parts of DC were hit with some sort of virus that knocked out internet access earlier today. Our internet access went out at about 3pm and got restored about 30 minutes later. Must be moving coast-to-coast. Too bad I really wanted to read www.ejectejecteject.com tonight.

"Michelle Malkin, VCT-American Patrol Links, VDare, and American Patrol are down now. I get error 404 or 'this page cannot be displayed', 'contact webmaster', 'website has either expired or spelling is wrong', etc. I dont think this is just a coincidence since they all deal with illegal immigration. These websites all seem to go at the same time."

If that were true, Free Republic would be down. I never checked who American Patrol VDare's hosts are, but I bet it's HM.

Gotta love the IIS servers that are on the net!

My comcast visitors at my xanga site haven't dropped off any, but if you have frequent problems with your DNS server, try the one's at ev1.net. They belong to a Houston-based ISP and are very reliable. 207.218.192.38, 207.218.192.39. This is a dialup ISP.

Another bonus to this is if you're worried about folks spoofing your DNS servers as a broadband user (and aren't technical) this is the easiest path to take you out of the top percent of such victims.

FR runs on Apache, and most likely a Unix or Linux server. Not much worrying about viri and worms for FR.

It's a large-scale DDOS attack on Hosting Matters :

We have confirmed that the tonight's trouble is being caused by a DDOS attack. We are working as fast as possible to get things back up. We will post more information as we have it.

A lot of political blogs host with them so they must have their hands full.

That's good. (But-monkey) Hosting Matters is all Linux, as well.

What information indicates that?

Linux doesn't stop an overwhelming Denial Of Service attack, if that's the case.

Yes, I was just pointing out what HM had. The same would go for FR and it hasn't happened, ergo my doubt about a political conspiracy afoot.
