Mysterious jet tied to torture flights

The first question is: Where is Leonard T. Bayard? The next question is: Who is Leonard T. Bayard? But the most important question may be: Does Leonard T. Bayard even exist?
The questions arise because the signature of a Leonard Thomas Bayard appears on the annual report of a Portland-based company, Bayard Foreign Marketing LLC, that was filed in August with the Oregon secretary of state.
According to federal records, Bayard Foreign Marketing is the newest owner of a U.S.-registered Gulfstream V executive jet reportedly used since Sept. 11, 2001, to transport suspected Al Qaeda operatives to countries such as Egypt and Syria, where some of them claim to have later been tortured.
The Central Intelligence Agency (news - web sites) has declined to discuss the plane. But one retired CIA (news - web sites) officer said that he understood the Gulfstream had been operated by the Joint Special Operations Command, an interagency unit that organizes counterterrorist operations in conjunction with the CIA and military special forces.
A search of commercial databases turned up no information on Leonard Thomas Bayard: no residence address, no telephone number, no Social Security (news - web sites) number, no credit history, no automobile or property ownership records--in short, none of the information commonly associated with real people.
And yet, someone signed the name Leonard T. Bayard to Bayard Foreign Marketing's annual report.
The report, which describes the company as an "international marketing firm," lists Bayard's principal place of business as a suite in a historic downtown Portland office building known as the Pittock Block. But a visitor to the suite who asked to see Bayard was told by a receptionist only that "Mr. Bayard doesn't work here."

I have mixed feelings on whether the press should be reporting on these types of subjects.

Crewdson is majorly yesterday and over. He's a mainstream liberal, and he doesn't open his talking points memorandums fast enough. Nothing new here.

How secret could any of this be if some moron from the Trib can find it out?
To: aynrandfreak
I have mixed feelings on whether the press should be reporting on these types of subjects. It shouldn't.
And even when reading the whole story, there wasn't anything to justify the word "torture" in the headline.

I thought this was going to be about another 28-hour Northwest Airlines flight without food, water, or toilets....never mind.

And even when reading the whole story, there wasn't anything to justify the word "torture" in the headline.
The article mentions it here:
. . . is the newest owner of a U.S.-registered Gulfstream V executive jet reportedly used since Sept. 11, 2001, to transport suspected Al Qaeda operatives to countries such as Egypt and Syria, where some of them claim to have later been tortured.

Ha. The mystery continues.
This story has been reported since last spring, so it's not as if the Trib or the WashPost (with a story last month) is doing something completely seditious.
But it is interesting that the Gulfstream was yet again sold to (new, shawdowy) owners, just as the stories were piling up in November.
DoD must be having fun with this.

A message left by a reporter went unanswered. The CIA has long had a well-known practice of "backstopping" local telephone numbers . . . What in the world is a reporter doing snooping around the periphery of a CIA operation? Does he think he's going to get a big scoop? Does he think he's going to bring down the President? The CIA? Does he think he's going to prove America is evil and help bring it down, too? Does he think he'll be loved in Hollywood?
I think the CIA should make him disappear.
To: aynrandfreak
And yet, someone signed the name Leonard T. Bayard... Yep, I guess Ben Dover or Seymour Butts would have been too obvious. Sounds like DoD is giving the media something to do. I'll bet they're having a good laugh right now.

No, no, no, no. That's not a torture flight. What is a torture flight is the one I took back from Greece a couple of years ago.
I don't know whether the women passengers were Pakistani or Indian, but they didn't know how to use the airplane lavatory. I swear to God, they were trying to stand over the toilet to pee and they got it everywhere. That was 16 hours of hell, and I think they had to burn that plane after we landed.
That's a torture flight.

All my bags are packed, I'm ready to go; I'm standing here
outside your door, I'd hate wake you up to say goodbye
But the dawn is breaking this early morn; my taxi's waiting,
he's blowing his horn; already I'm so lonesome I could die
-CHORUS-
So kiss me and smile for me, tell me that you'll wait for me,
hold me like you'll never let me go.......coz I'm leaving on a jet
plane, I dont know when I'll be back again; Oh babe, I hate to go
There's so many times I've let you down, so many times I've
played around but tell him that they don't mean a thing
Every place I go I think of you, every song I sing I sing for
you; when I comeback I'll wear your wedding ring
-CHORUS-
So kiss me and smile for me, tell me that you'll wait for me,
hold me like you'll never let me go.......coz I'm leaving on a jet
plane, I dont know when I'll be back again; Oh babe, I hate to go
-musical interlude-
Now the time has come to leave you; One more time oh let me
kiss you, and close your eyes and I'll be on my way
Dream about the days to come when I wont have to leave
alone, by the times that I wont have to say.........
-CHORUS-
So kiss me and smile for me, tell me that you'll wait for me,
hold me like you'll never let me go.......coz I'm leaving on a jet
plane, I dont know when I'll be back again; Oh babe, I hate to go
-CHORUS-

Maybe Leonard T. Bayard is Valerie Plame. The Secret Agent Woman herself? Inquiring minds want to know!
Not this inquiring mind, however. The government sometimes has to do things that the general public would find distasteful. It is the cost of doing business with a world that has its head up its @ss. Its gotta be done, but no one said it would be pretty.

If you understand the well-respected British firm, "Universal Exports" or certain other firms (nothing more modern than the 60s/70s here) such as Southern Air Transport, Air America, Pacific Grain Expediters, Northern Michigan Tool and Die Repair, Inc., The Inter Latin American Chamber of Commerce, Harris-Johanessen Pumps Inc. of Newport News, the Glomar Explorer and Global Marine, International Aircrew Supply Inc. and a few others, then you understand this.

No, very reliable, long range, etc. Transporting terrs requires nothing special. A seat, high security handcuffs and leg irons, a hobble, and bag over the head.
Rule #7, Hide in plain sight.
We once got a Huey "off the books in RVN" Where did we hide it? In a row of 20 other Hueys.
Traded it to the Filipino "PhilCag" for two great armored cars.

Even if all of this is true, how is it wrong to repatriate Egyptian nationals to face the music in their own countries? I don't see anyone accusing us of turning them over to the Shin Bet in Israel for torture.
So JSOC leased a plane, whoopee.

I don't think it was left up. They got the seat, the floor, the door, and the mirror. I didn't check the ceiling. Following one of them into the lavatory was like diving into a urine aquarium.
But no way could I hold it for 16 hours.

I suspect the reporter is trying to tag the US with "rendering", transporting detainees to countries that use torture methods that we are denied by law. Big story there if true.
In Danang, our trader swapped 2 air conditioners for a jeep. IG came through a month later so TDY orders were drawn up and the jeep and a couple guys went to Phu Bai. IG finished Danang and went to Phu Bai. Our guys gave a wave passing them on the road.
Don't tell anyone.

The Inspector General couldn't enter our spaces; just had to count the vehicles outside. A pickup and a stake truck. Also, they couldn't approach our aircraft or hangers. You've no idea how pissed off IG can be when they aren't allowed to inspect something. IG would have hooked us for an unaccounted sandwich...but in our business we had early warning. And dutifully directed them to the location of the disposed sandwich.
