Cyclone Kerry may move towards Australia.
Weather forecasters are keeping a close watch on a cyclone expected to move slowly towards Australia.
The category three Cyclone Kerry formed near Fiji on January 6 and has moved slowly westwards, weather forecaster Jeff Callaghan said.
"It's way, way out in the eastern part of our area and moving very slowly at the moment," Mr Callaghan told AAP.
"It will probably do that for another 24 hours then just slowly move towards the Queensland coast."
By mid-morning, Cyclone Kerry was in the Coral Sea about 1,200 km east-north-east of the north Queensland city of Mackay.
Wind gusts of 170 kph near the centre which had the destructive power to unroof houses, he said.
A high pressure ridge and the cyclone were expected to maintain strong winds over the Queensland coast for the next few days.

Avoid anything named Kerry.......
To: Red Sea Swimmer
Well, given flip-flop (or weather-vane) nature of Kerry, it is highly probable that the said cyclone will dither which way to turn, will get nowhere, and finally will dissipate ingloriously. But still get prepared.

There is unfortunately now a Tropical Cyclone in the Bay of Bengal as well, forecast to move slowly over Sri Lanka.

Should the Aussies wear Flip Flops during the storm ?
P.S. It looks like the cyclone is not really much of a threat, but we will have to keep an eye on it, in-case it gets "above itself".

Unlike the authorities in the tsunami devistated area, the Aussie authorities have at least allowed word of a natural disaster out to the public.

To: mtbopfuyn
It's not a "fair-dinkum" cyclone. More like an irrelevant Willy Willy, i.e. Full of wind and bluster, but not really amounting to much.
To: Red Sea Swimmer
LOL. I think so. Can't believe the Cyclone is named Kerry.!

I don't think this cyclone is a big problem. I think the name however of this transient wind form is hilarious.

This cyclone has more plans than you can shake a stick at. If it hits your area they could be swirling about your heads at a dizzying clip, all the while with a hideously scary drone.
Oh, and just when you think it's behind, watch your backs.

Yippee! Us Queenslanders love our cyclones, they are as much a part of our lives as cockroaches and fruit-bats. But calling it Kerry, well that's a bit much!

Peter Beattie has just announced State Government funding for the building of the "Kerry Institute for the Study of Inconsequential Wind Forms." Queensland will now have another "Big" object to add to it's tourist attractions. "The Big Thong".
To: Red Sea Swimmer
P.S. "The Big Thong" was not a musical recording put out by Ita Buttrose in the 1970's.
To: Red Sea Swimmer
To go with the Big Banana in New South Wales, the Giant Prawn, the huge Merino - and the Big Pineapple on the north coast?
Hey, leave Beattie alone, I'm a crazy Queenslander myself, you know how we are, we vote for Labour in the State and conservative in Federal elections. Good old aussie tradition; two bob each way!
But I'll pass on the giant thong thanks.
