Colonel David H. Hackworth was interviewed by Rather as an expert to evaluate the documents that Mapes obtained from Lieutenant Colonel Burkett.... Even though Colonel Hackworth was never in the TexANG, did not know Lieutenant Colonel Killian or any of the other releveant individuals, had no personal knowledge of President Bush's service in the TexANG and had no personal knowledge regarding the Killian documents, he reached some high critical conclusions....
First, Colonel Hackworth concluded that the documents were 'genuine.'
...
Second, Colonel Hackworth concluded that, by not taking his physical, then-Lieutenant Bush was 'insubordinate' and would have been treated more harshly had he been 'an unconnected Lieutenant.'
...
Rather thought Colonel Hackworth was a 'strong and valuable expert witness.' Mapes also believed that Colonel Hackworth was important for the Segment and included excerpts of his interview in early drafts of the September 8 Segment script. These excerpts were ultimately cut from the final scrippt by Heyward and West.
Ahhhh, Mr. Hackworthless.... The gift that keeps on giving. Just when you thought the guy couldn't get anymore discredited....
He could tell that from copies. Wow, I'm ever so impressed.
I still respect Hack for his service, but he has lost his effing mind.
Whats a Hack Worth now a days?
Hmmn, not much.
Maybe Hackworth has a personal vendetta against the Bush family, similar to Perot in 92?
"What is he becoming??"
The transformation has already taken place.......a turncoat.
Hack is a hack.
Liddy used to have him on all the time, does he still?
I really dug Hack when he came out with his book but came to realize that, while his service is respectable, he is a pacifist who would not fight for anything anymore. Pretty damn sad.
I use to think that Col. Hackworth was a good guy and all the sudden he turned into a Bush Basher saying that everything the adminstration was doing was wrong. I don't know what happened to him.
Will Mapes go quietly? If her severance package isn't 7 figures..she may decide to write a book..
Hackworth in the middle of this
Is there a Mrs. Hackworth? Perhaps he's a "perfumed prince".
I believe it was on Free Republic that I first heard the phrase:
PRESSTITUTE
All of this enormous effort to defeat the President, and it still didn't work. Watch out for it to get really nefarious from here on out.
If correct, COL Hackworth has lost any remaining respect from me concerning commenting on military affairs.
He deserves respect for his military service. For what he did in regards to 60 Minutes, he deserves none.
Hackworth is an armchair General. Tommy Franks has no use for these guys. He lost all credibility with me due to his "armchairing" on FOX NEWS.
I believe Hackworth was the one who first used the expression "perfumed prince" of Wesley Clark (unless he was just repeating someone else's phrase). If I remember correctly, during that brief moment in 2003 when it looked like Clark might be a serious contender for the Democratic nomination, Hackworth had done a 180 on Clark...he is just obsessively anti-Bush.
Remember when Jessica Lynch and her convoy were attacked during the war?
That very nite, Hackworth was on Larry King stating he had "sources" in the field telling him that over 200 soldiers died in that attack.
Of course he was proven very wrong.
Is there a Mrs. Hackworth? Perhaps he's a "perfumed prince".
I think Hack & Weasley Clark will soon start their campaign to promote active homosexuality in the military. Then Hack, aka Commander McBragg, can regale us with tales of how a quick fudge pack prior to battle prepared him singlehandedly take out 90 enemy fighters.
Thread now set up on Hackworth's part.
I used to kinda like old Hack. Now he's become just that, an old hack.
Weren't you citing Hackworth the other day as some kind of person to look to for information?
What's your opinion of telling flat out lies?
I believe that freepers in short order surmised as much (based on a series of documentation that was being unearthed).
Vindicated again.
This is your brain on drugs, they don't call it dope for nothing.
IMHO, what happened to him was two things.
First, I think he was always the sort of guy who liked to cut across the grain, and had no internal meter for knowing how much was too much. This helps to explain his Army career -- to some extent that's helpful and good, but too much of it begins to cause problems.
Second, I think he got a taste for fame and attention, which fed his innate liking for cutting across the grain. At some point I think getting attention became far more important to him than the facts.
Hackworthless is the right take on this man.
He has a vendetta for whatever reason against the President. And now hacker is developing a reputation for shoddy work. Time he retired his eagle and started playing a lot more golf.
How could Hack conclude that fake documents were genuine? If he said this after the criticisms arose, then he's an idiot. If he said this beforehand, then he's pretending to know what he's not expert (obviously) in. That is called "posing" and is a form of lying.
How could Hack conclude that Bush was insubordinate about a physical, when no one is ordered to take physicals except in the general sense of having to get their annual physical? This is something Hack, a former military member, should have been aware of. If he knew so, but attacked Bush anyway, the hacker simply reveals that he'll lie to injure this president. If he did not know this common information, then one needs to question his "expert status," but one also needs to recognize that he's again posing.
This all makes hacker appear to be a liar....no matter how hard you try to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Thanks.
Now that I have read the entire report TWICE,
I am in total agreement with you: NOT HAPPY.
Can't call the investigation a whitewash because it's not,
but the panel stopped short of calling a spade a spade; instead
deferring to the better angels sort of stance.
Cannot PROVE that Mapes and Rather had any political bias.
Good Lord!
Why am I not surprised? He was born David Hack. He later added the *worth* to the objections of all who knew him.
I think he's Lt. Col.
Hackworth's fall from experienced commentator to professional Bush-hater has been precipitous, deliberate, and sad.
I suppose you mean that he could beat McCain in the race to a camera. You may be right about his liking the attention. Of course it is all from the liberals.
And Harold Stassen for his service as Governor of Minnesota in 1948..
Talk about stretching your 15 minutes of fame out to the breaking point!
Back in the Clinton days, all of Hack's attention came from conservatives. His "base," if you will, is with the WND/NewsMax/Buchananite crowd. But he'll take whatever attention he can get.
This Hackworth is one of the biggest opportunistic political animals in Washington. He is a deplorable person. In 1996 he caused Admiral Boorda to commit suicide when he exposed that two of his medals were not appropriately obtained.
I always thought a bird, but he can retire his leaves. That's ok, too. :>)
{Remember Rather's hasty follow-up program with Bush's CO's poor elderly secretary, in which he credited her gossipy remembrances and claimed insider status at the time as further "proof" that the CO was unhappy with Bush, and that Bush had not acted properly as a Guard pilot? This, while the woman also clearly stated that the documents were not hers, and were not done on a typewriter she used and were not in proper form. I think she hinted that in her opinion someone probably had reconstructed them from another source that she knew nothing about. That omission of fixing any responsibility for the Rather interview of this Democrat Dame is very glaring, in my view. Are we supposed to forget that little episode ever aired? Not a chance.}
Sounds as if he likes to stir the s--t.
Hackworth is a nut case who has been hit in the head too many times.
Please see my #46...has anyone else complained about this? Or was it mentioned in the report...I must admit to having only read excerpts.
I saw Hack at a "Homeland Security conference" put on by one of the local talkers here in the Dallas area. He looked like father Mulcahey.
I think he has several things going: One, he has gotten a little wrapped up in being a celebrity, and has allowed himself to forgo loyalty to his service in place of loyalty to money. Second, he is getting old, and I suspect is concerned that he may lose his status as a public figure/war hero to some younger guy who has more recent experience with the military overall. After all, Hack's personal military experience and knowledge is now some 30 years out of date. It's only a matter of time before some young stud fresh out of Afghanistan or Iraq, who knows a lot more about current military strategy and technology, starts getting the offers to write columns for SOF, or appear on radio talk shows and Fox.
