CNN/USA Today/Gallup: Bush's Approval Rating Climbs [52% Approve, 44% Disapprove]

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush got high marks for his handling of the tsunami disaster, and his job approval rating went up in a CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll released Monday, but most of those surveyed had doubts about his call to overhaul Social Security.

Bush's job approval rating went up to 52 percent in the poll, which was conducted Friday through Sunday in phone calls to 1,008 adult Americans. That's an improvement of 3 percentage points from the last CNN poll, taken in mid-December.

Another 44 percent said they disapproved of his job performance, down 2 percentage points from the December 17-19 survey. The latest poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Bush got his highest marks in a year on his handling of the economy, with 50 percent of those polled saying they approved of his performance.

He also got high marks for his handling of the Indian Ocean tsunami disaster, with 75 percent of respondents saying they approved of the way he handling it.

But only 42 percent of those surveyed said they approved of his handling of the war in Iraq, and 56 percent disapproved.

And 52 percent said they disapproved of his handling of Social Security -- an issue Bush has called on Congress to tackle in his second term.

Only 41 percent said they approved of Bush's desire to revamp Social Security, on which he has promised to spend the "political capital" he earned from his November election victory.

Well, GWB, bless him, does not live by polls. At least by CNN/Gallup ones.

When you don't get the press and Democrats hammering him negatively 24-7, his ratings go and stay up.

Gallop's final poll of the election season allotted Kerry the remaining two percentage points without just cause.

So, Add two percentage points to this poll number.

Also, funny how when the Libs unfairly bash Bush his polling goes up, huh?

Just asking and wondering -

Where is the poll/rating on immigration and how it is going to be done according to President Bush -

No major poll is taken often on the illegals issue - that I know of - and announced on the news - wondering why - Strange that all networks seem to be avoiding the issue -

It appears both the left and right ignore something that is hot with the citizens - Is there a reason? Even during the Senate hearings - the questions were few -

Is the media and the admin. and Congress trying to hide the issue - by covering it up with other "news" - such as a memo on abuse - or the CBS memo - Hoping that the issue of immigration doesn't come up before the guy's vote to become A.G.

just a wondering - why no polls on certain issues that the media knows is of concern with the public -

It has been said that MSM media bias is good for 5-10 points in the polls (and perhaps on election day as well). Nonetheless, I sense that we are ever so slowly winning the WOL (war on liberalism).

But only 42 percent of those surveyed said they approved of his handling of the war in Iraq, and 56 percent disapproved.

Doesn't anyone know what the exact wording they use for this question??

Because .. though I think they could do things better ... it doesn't mean I am against being in Iraq

Immigration is only a hot topic among conservative activists. You'd be surprised at how few people outside our little echo chamber really care about it.

Thanks for the site -

I wish he was his own man on all issue facing America - As President Bush is great on so much - It just is amazing how far he falls on the illegals issue

The big mystery is why are all the major networks avoiding good coverage of the illegals issue - both sides ignore it - strange, to say the least - Who really pulls the strings -

Come 2006/2008 - if nothing changes with the Republicans on this issue - they could lose big time - As I can't believe any real American will stand still much longer and see America go down because of the crap that comes with all these illegals -

Thanks again for the site -

In a way, these polls sicken me. The only reason I can see for this is the tsunami relief action, which I suppose shows Bush as a "good guy" instead of a "bad guy". As if he would have done anything differently. /sarcasm>
