I found this waiting for a dental appointment ealier this morning. It brings to light something I never thought of with the flight 2 688's and the VLS system.
I also liked the part about the local chapter of U.S. Submarine Veterans. Ironic that it was a Canadian Submariner to make the first controbution!

I don't give a damn what anyone will say, when the shit hit the fan on a ship, the first words out of anyone's mouth is "chief," BTDT.

The New York Times, in its editions today, reports that the submarine hit so incredibly hard that about 60 of its 137 crew were injured and that the one sailor who died was thrown 20 feet by the impact, according to internal Navy e-mail messages sent by Rear Adm. Paul F. Sullivan, the commander of submarines in the Pacific.

Is there a submarine ping list? If there is, I'm sure my husband would like to be added to it. He's SilentServiceCPO.

Hell of a situation. Suddenly being thrown and injured then hearing all hell break loose and knowing what you do in the next minute may save or sink a ship with it's entire crew.

To the men that configured the saving valve solution to keep the boat afloat. This is why there is submarine qualifications.

Submariners around the country were poring over charts of the area where the San Francisco hit the seamount and were coming to the same conclusion: The ocean bottom was supposed to be more than a mile below where the San Francisco hit.So the Skipper's career may not be over.

The sub crews we have always have been the best on the planet. This just further proves the point.

Just to answer that question ALREADY answered on at least 4 other posts...
1.No, Submerged subs don't use active sonar to determine position... it gives thier location away
2.No, the earthquake had nothing to do with it, different teconic plate
3.No, there are no windows to look out of....
4. No subs don't use conventional sealanes, they use thier own lanes which are pretty well documented
5. No, the skipper is not necessarly toast, if it was an uncharted seamount
Seamounts sometimes occurr with out any sismic signature, they just ooze lava and build up like stalagtites

Hmm..that's an interesting question, I'll have to look up the requirments for the PUC. If not that maybe Navy Accomindation Medal (NAM) for the entire crew, awarded by the group, or Squadren commander?
