My son's on the USS Charlotte (SSN-766). Would you add me to your Submariner ping list?

So we are now calling Chinese submarines "seamounts" for public consumption? ;) Sure. And we created a previously non-existant sea mount to make the story more believable. ; )

Then you DEFINITELY didn't want to have been on the USS Helena (SSN-725) back in '89. She blew up her reduction gears on a loss of PLO drill and had to try to get back on the outboard until a seagoing tug got to them. Took them three WEEKS to get back to Pearl.
I was back on the Buffalo (SSN-715) back in those days.
Bravo Zulu to the crew and Electric Boat.

Concur--CO will likely get a Legion of Merit at least if he's found not to be at fault. OOD will be well up there as well.

The 605 boat had no EPM or reduction gears, just a boomer's SPM ,transited the Gulf Stream on the Outboard, damn near lost the boat, lost depth control due to headway being backward, (faster current than boat) and the control surfaces operating in reverse. Lost the steam plant and the main due to an errant washer.

I would be willing to bet that some of the crew will be teaching some of the damage control classes in sub school, and probably re-writing some of the lessons.
