Famed War Correspondent Joe Galloway Calls for U.S. Pullout After Iraq Elections
Editor & Publisher ^ | Jan 14 05 | Editor & Publisher

Posted on 01/15/2005 7:10:37 PM PST by churchillbuff

YORK In his latest column for Knight Ridder newspapers, famed war correspondent Joseph L. Galloway, a Bronze Star winner, calls for the United States, following Iraqi elections on Jan. 30, to "declare victory and begin leaving."

He joins the rather small band of commentators or editorialists advocating withdrawal.

Last month, in a USA Today column, founder Al Neuharth called for the United States to leave Iraq "sooner rather than later."

Galloway, co-author of "We Were Soldiers Once... and Young," won a Bronze Star in Vietnam after saving the lives of several soldiers and has covered nearly every major conflict since, including the current one.

In his current column he writes that if we stay the course in Iraq "we're likely doomed to an even bloodier and more costly defeat in a country divided along ethnic and religious fault lines and headed toward civil war. ...

"The problem is that there is no way we can win -- defeat the insurgents and install a stable, democratic, friendly government -- and bad things are going to happen anyway. There is no way Americans are willing to pay the price even of stalemate, never mind an unattainable victory. ...

"Why can't we win? Because we charged in with false premises and bogus assumptions. Because for every insurgent we kill, two or three more join the cause. Because even our advertised victories -- like Fallujah, where we apparently had to destroy the city in order to save it, or Samarra or Ramadi -- only turned the entire Sunni population against the United States and its Iraqi allies. ...

"If we learned nothing else from the bitter history of Vietnam it should be that there are places and people who won't accept change and won't quit fighting until even the most powerful nation and army in the world wearies of the killing and dying. ...

"As we approach the second anniversary of our invasion of Iraq we need to be discussing and debating what we are gaining, if anything, from this war and what we are losing."

OUR Worl in this Region is Only Just BEGINNING. Saudi Arabia, Iran, Syria, etc. The Powder Keg is primed and ready to explode. When these ponificators have such short sightedness it shows their true colors. Anyone with half a brain will realize that Saudi Arabia will be the Next great effort. it will get worse before it gets better, we all should have much patience and steadfastness. The Battle has Yet to begin, in earnest...

No, we should leave when the job is done. We had a similar crowd of know-it-alls demanding that we withdraw from Vietnam in the 60's and 70's. We know how well Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia turned out after we left.

Those same know-nothings disregarded our roles in post-war Germany and Japan, p. Their backers became more obvious with the passing of time; who now shores those who would seek the felling of our nation and our way of life?

I couldn't agree with you more.

Where is Sergeant Major "Any-of-you-a**holes-call-me-grandpa . . . I'll-kill-you" Basil L. Pumley when we need him to whisper a few encouraging words into the ear of his old Ia Drang Valley bud?

I have to agree. Everyone wants to be the president. Once troops are committed, the discussion is over. Joe's opinion only helps the enemy. It's a bit above his pay grade too!

I would hardly call "arm-chair quarterback" name-calling.

How many people have you talked to who work close to the Iraq mission, and how do you know how many share this point of view?

" however, it appears he was misled as far as the weapons of mass destruction." As was the previous administration, if in fact it is true that Saddam never had them, or was never exploring the capabilities of making them.

I think you are right. We haven't engaged Iraq and Afghanistan only to leave Syria, Iran and N. Korea as transnational terrorist training grounds.

Yep. Benedict Arnold and John Kerry should be enough to prove that to anyone.

There is no way Americans are willing to pay the price even of stalemate, never mind an unattainable victory. ...

The lesson our enemies learned in Viet Nam was "Have patience".

Be patient and wait for the American media to tell the American people that the war is lost.

Be patient and wait for the American street demonstrators to fill the TV screens with anti-American rhetoric.

All Islam has to do is be patient.

I have a simple question for you. When some dictatorial nut is routinely firing missiles at your fellow countrymen, do you think that constitutes an imminent threat that needs to be responded to by eliminating the nut?

The defeatists are coming in drove in the last few days.

We will withdraw from Iraq when we achieve our goals of establishing a sovereign non terrorist government, destroy all the terrorists in Iraq, and make Iraq as the model for the new Middle East where other counties in the ME should follow. Any withdrawal before this is a defeat. We will not be defeated, we are winning this war, we will win this war.

Wonder how many of your fellow countrymen know which missiles and which dictatorial nut you're talking about?

I'd like to be wrong, but I tend to think few even have an idea how many retalitory sorties were flown against that nut long before the "official" war broke out.

Joe is a hero, and he is right. If you disagree, maybe you should take your blinders off and study the history of Iraq, and then talk to anybody who has spent time fighting over there. I was for the war in the beginning, but this man is right. The part where he is wrong though, is when we leave, nothing should be left alive in the entire country.
