Muslim Salvation Organization of Burma (MSOB)
P.O. Box 70, Chiang Mai 50000 Thailand
Phone: (053) 308768
Fax: (66 53) 308768
Focus: There are over 6 million people of Muslim background in Burma. About 20% inhabited in Arakan Division bordering with Bangladesh. Part of the Muslims in Arakan Division is called Rohingya Muslims, and they have been persecuted in mass during the past 2 decades. These Rohingya Muslim Refugees are welknown and helped by international Muslim Relief Organizations.
Since early 1980's the military gvernments of Burma have started persecution on Muslims in other parts of Burma. Many Muslim villages in Karen State, Mon State and Tanassarim Division were burnt down, people were torture, killed and Muslim girls were raped. Masajids and Madarasas were destroyed. Thousands of Muslims fled to Thai border in the Karen insurgent stronghold areas. As the Karen insurgent strongholds have been occupied by the government troops in recent years, these Muslims again fled to Thailand and become refugees. There are about 30,000 to 50,000 Musli refugees in 28 Refugee Camps. Due to lack of funds MSOB could visit 2 Camps and obtained the population data and inspected their needs. They are depending on Christian Missions for their food, shelter and clothes.
There are still many shortages n Islamic facilities such as Holy Quran and Islamic Books to teach the children, materials for prayer centers and mosques, electricity at the mosques, water supplies, etc. which the non-Muslim organizations cannot provide. Hitherto no outside Islamic organizations has given attention to help these Burmese Muslim refugees yet. MSOB is a newly formed organization to coordinate the international Islamic organizations to fulfil these needs. Please join your hand with us in the way of Allah by granting your Zakah and Sadaqah to these distressed Muslims. Allah will bless you.

Shukri Abu Baker: co-founder, president and chief executive officer.

"Numerous FBI sources have identified Baker as being a member of Hamas," according to a memo drafted by former FBI counterterrorism director Dale L. Watson. Baker was introduced as the "senior vice president in Hamas" ("second only to Mohammed El Mezain" [see below]) at a 1994 Islamic Association of Palestine conference in Culver City, California, according to an informant cited in the memo.

Baker was one of three HLF leaders who attended an October 1993 meeting in Philadelphia with Hamas activists. Those present discussed supporting Hamas in the United States through fundraising and political activity, according to the FBI, with emphasis on raising funds for injured and imprisoned Hamas activists, and families of Hamas activists.

At least eleven trips by Hamas leaders to the U.S. were charged to two American Express accounts bearing Baker's name along with HLF's, according to the FBI. (One account used HLF's original name, the Occupied Land Fund.)

The BIG difference I see in charity, is that Christian charity groups help EVERYONE, while Muslim groups seek to help only other Muslims.

Given that the Quoran encourages the Muslims to be generous in helping others, in practice they are perhaps the most inhospitable people on earth. With wealth beyond measure under their feet, these entire nations are world leaders in famine, disease, poverty and illiteracy.

Are all muslims our enemy? No, I don't think so; but they aren't our friends either. They are our allies, as long as it suits their short term agenda.

What to do when therapies are not working
Is there a role for modified directly observed therapy (MDOT)?

Authors: Timothy P. Flanigan, MD1,2; Jennifer A. Mitty, MD, MPH1,2; Helen G. Loewenthal1, MSW; Mohamed M. Elhowety MD ; Cynthia J. MacLeod, RN1; Lauri B. Bazerman, MS1; Grace E. Macalino, PhD2
1 The Miriam Hospital, Providence, Rhode Island
2 Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island

Some members of the MDOT team at Miriam Hospital's Immunology Center
In 1996, HIV therapies changed dramatically with the development of potent new HIV inhibitors; the era of highly active
antiretroviral therapy (HAART) had begun. From 1996 to 1998, we saw extraordinary advances in which patients, who previously had high viral loads and very low CD4 counts and had not responded to therapy, suddenly had tremendous clinical improvement on the combination of medications that made up HAART. Opportunistic infections that were previously untreatable resolved spontaneously due to immune reconstitution. Patients whose CD4 counts had been less than 50 were able to sustain CD4 count rises to well over 200 and eventually even up to the normal range of 500. Mortality rates due to AIDS fell by over 80 percent and AIDS case rates plummeted as individuals with HIV infection were able to sustain CD4 counts of over 200.

Unfortunately, many patients were not able to realize the benefits of HAART. Many of the patients we see at the Brown University/The Miriam Hospital Immunology Center suffer from severe depression, chronic substance abuse (including alcohol, heroin, and/or cocaine use) and, for many reasons, tremendous social instability including homelessness, family disintegration, and lack of support. Too often, all these conditions coincide.
