ALGIERS (Reuters) - An American Christian pastor was stabbed in the Algerian capital on Wednesday and security services were investigating whether the attack was linked to Islamist rebels, security and diplomatic sources said.

Hugh Johnson of the Protestant Church of Algeria was stabbed by an unidentified man in downtown Algiers and later underwent surgery. His condition was not life-threatening, diplomats said.

"An investigation is under way to determine any link with terrorism," said the security source, who asked to remain anonymous.

Algeria, a member of the oil producing cartel OPEC, is just emerging from more than a decade of violence. Islamist groups began an uprising after the army, fearing an Iranian-style revolution, canceled a parliamentary election in 1992 that a hard-line Islamic party was set to win.

More than 150,000 people have since died, according to human rights groups, but violence has fallen sharply in recent years.

Is there reason to automatically think this would be terrorist linked? Couldn't it just have easily been "I want the guy's wallet" linked?

This reminds me of all those imams who have been stabbed while walking through the Vatican.
