Hollywood is ready for a kudocast overhaul.
"I don't think it's enough to just hand out awards. In order to survive, award shows need to be the variety specials of the new millennium," says Bob Bain, a producer of the Billboard and Teen Choice awards shows.
The Jan. 16 Golden Globes slumped to their worst performance since moving to NBC in 1996. The People's Choice Awards posted its lowest ratings on record.
All this bad news comes at the height of awards season, with Oscar noms to be unveiled Jan. 25 and the ceremony slated for Feb. 27.
And the fear extends beyond this season: The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, still stunned over the lowest Emmy ratings in 14 years, has decided to give a makeover to its kudocast next September.
Everyone has a stake in keeping the genre healthy.
Awards shows make big bucks for the non-profit org handing out prizes, as well as the network. Studio execs like the opportunity to give plugs to current and upcoming films and TV shows. And stars, constantly battered by gossip about their private lives, like to remind the public that they are artists whose work should be taken seriously.

About 17 million viewers watched the awards (Globes) ceremony on NBC, its smallest audience ever since it was first aired on broadcast television in 1996. The Globes were down about 10 million viewers from last year, when the show drew its biggest audience ever.
31st Annual People's Choice Awards[lowest ratings on record] -Michael Moore film Fahrenheit 9/11, which took a critical look at U.S. President George W. Bush's actions after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, won the favourite movie award, while Mel Gibson's explicit The Passion of the Christ won in the favourite drama category.
Moore dedicated his win to the U.S. troops fighting overseas and said he was "amazed'' that people voted his film their favourite.
"I love making movies and I'll take this as an invitation to make more Fahrenheit 9/11s,'' Moore said.

Mail the awards to the winners. Mention the winners on "Entertainment Tonight" and forget the glam-fest.

How dare Hollywood celebrate anything! What about the tsunami victims?!!! Shouldn't Hollywood take all the millions that will be wasted on all these "award" shows and donate it to the tsunami victims?!!! Heartless, rich, evil, stingy Democrats!!!
The award show hit its zenith back when there were a grand total of three choices on the tube, so there was a huge "captive audience" factor. If you had nothing better to do, you watched the Oscars or the Emmys, often because they preempted whatever it was you would have watched. Even at that, Ol' Grampa Skid would not - under any circumstances - watch the Tony Awards... he felt (and still feels) that the test pattern was superior in entertainment value.

ads for the musical Grammies! Now there's a dead
horse of another brand of major nip and tuck!
Incidentally, Jamie Fox is DROP DEAD perfect as 'RAY'. If he isn't acknowledged for this performance, then the award system is exposed for the fraud it is.

At 9 p.m., "Desperate Housewives" had the evening's highest ratings with a 15.1/22 for ABC. NBC's "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" did an 8.6/12 to edge the 8.4/12 for hour two of FOX's "24," though the FOX drama pulled in more viewers. CBS' telecast of the People's Choice Awards did a 6.9/10.

Agreed. I was watching the news the other morning and they had a recap of one of the awards show (Golden Globe? Hell, I don't know). Anyway, my wife and I hadn't heard of at least 3/4 of the people that won awards. Then there was a commercial on last night that had a montage of "stars" at some awards show--couldn't recognize a single one of them. Not one.
Maybe because there's an award show every third day? "And by golly we'll keep having award shows until EVERYBODY wins one for SOMETHING!" "And now, the winner in the Best Hair Style Worn by a Supporting Actress Whose Name Begins with an 'L' Category..."
Or maybe, just maybe, we don't care? If Hollywood likes it, I know I'll probably hate it.

No kidding. I'd think being a doctor in Hollyweird nowadays would be a lucrative business, what with all the self-absorbed celebs constantly breaking their arms to pat each other on the back all the time.
