University of Oregon BANS Support Of The Troops...
GOPBloggers ^ | 1/24/2005 | Kevin McCullough

So let's review... 1. University employees at the University of Oregon are not allowed to support the troops who defend those employees' freedoms and the security they live under. 2. "Supporting the troops" is deemed a political statement...so much for the "We all support the troops" talking points. 3. Even if this WAS political expression - university employees are not allowed to express themselves politically? (Can Instapundit weigh in on the legalities of University Campus political expression?)

The whole leftist hippie counterculture thing started with the Berkely Free Speach Movement. Obviously free speech is only for lefties.

Not that I doubt it, but is there a link to the Universities website that states this?

Its the same mentality that led Harvard to kick the military's JAG recruiters off of their law school campus as soon as a Federal Judge said they could w/o losing federal funds; followed by one of the lead plaintiffs calling the military a bunch of bigots.

What is not clear from this blog is what this ban applies to. If it is a ban on employees putting the ribbons on their own cars, then there is a clear cause for action. If the ban is on Support our Troops ribbons on vehicles owned by the U. of Oregon, then that's another issue altogether.

I could not find any further information regarding this, so I'm going to withhold my support until I know which it is.

Links, anyone?

OK, from a link in the blog's story. It was a University owned vehicle, not a personal vehicle. No action, then. The University may legally control what items may be displayed on its own vehicles, whether we like it or not:

A yellow ribbon sticker that says "Support The Troops" has created a big stir at the University of Oregon.
A day after a campus employee was told to remove the sticker from his maintenance vehicle -- people on campus are reacting.
It all started after a university employee complained.
Some think the university may have gone too far.
But for now... all the stickers are gone.
For some it's a sticker that supports the troops.
But at the University of Oregon... someone saw it as a political statement.
"I don't know how they think these are political.. i think they're patriotic," said Pete Baker, U of O delivery driver.
Pete Baker has had the stickers on his work truck... for months.

Even though I believe what the university has done is wrong and the policy should be changed. This was a university owned vehicle involved and not somebody's personnel vehicle. But I do believe they should be on every vehicle. It has nothing to do with politics .Its about supporting out troops.

I don't think publicly-owned vehicles should become traveling billboards. On the other hand, professors typically cover the door to their offices with stickers (the door is not theirs anymore than the maintenance truck belongs to the worker).

"The ivory tower just keeps getting taller..."

Not really. We only have to look up to it because the air heads who dwell there act as baloons and have caused it to drift wa-a-a-a-ay out there, deep into outer space.

Sick SOB's. I hope that when we get invaded by another nation they are the first to go. It will happen as long as we stay on this path of PC and socialism folks.

This is my point. Take a stroll around any campus and peek in the office of any professor and you see all types of political memorabilia. I think if the sticker said "Save the wales" there would be no issue. Don't kid yourselves into thinking that American Universities are evenhanded and fair about their political atmosphere.

This is a growing issue. FrontPageMag.com has articles about this all the time.Like this...

None of this surprises me. I spent several years in Eugene, Oregon, back in the early 1980s, and the intolerance, narrow-mindedness and outright bigotry of the Left there helped create the conservative that I am today.
