Dr. Pepper "Stacy's Mom" ad
Men's News Daily ^ | Monday Jan 24, 2005 | Fido969

Did anyone catch the Dr. Pepper ads shown during the playoffs yesterday?

The first ad features the song "Stacy's mom" (...has got it going on), which, if you have heard it, is sung by a hormone-driven teen who flirts back and forth with his girlfriend's mom. The Dr. Pepper ad shows a group of boys about 10-12 years old playing in a park when a mini-van drives up. Very close shots of the driver as she gets out of the van, a sneaker, keys jingling, a "tease" as the wind blows her blouse a few inches above her belt. Subtle, sexy stuff.

The kids stop and look as she pulls the side door open and pops the top on a cooler of Dr. Pepper.

The kids smile and race to the cooler.

The last few quick shots have the words from the song "I'm in love with Casey's mom..." one child gazes reverently up at the woman, who gives back a knowing smirk.

It was just CREEPY. Gender test! I can't imagine this commercial with a leering guy and some pre-pubescent girls. Ewwww.....

Anyway, the "Diet Doctor Pepper" commercial shows a fellow screaming as he tumbles down a mountain on a snowboard. He crashes in a heap in front of a couple of teenagers, one who says "I think your getting it, dad". Dad, flat on his face and covered with snow, manages to move only his hand in a "thumbs-up". Just another incompetent clumsy dad ad.

Anyway, I was struck by the contrast of the two ads.

This is just something that struck me and I posted it to the MND forum. I did a websearch of the topic, and to my surprise, found out I wasn't the only one who felt the same way about the commercial.

Freeper's thoughts?

Well, as a young teenage boy, a few of the kid's moms were hotties but it ain't for commercial TV.

The Dr Pepper ad bothered me too. Yeah, the 12-year-olds will love her when she opens her stash of Dr Pepper, but in 4 years or so, she's going to have to buy kegs for them -- if she wants to stay on their "Cool Mom" list.

Sounds like an abandoned, horrible advertisement. Symptomatic of a very disturbed culture. The one with the dad I don't mind. Sounds like the dad comes out more of a good sport than a hapless idiot.

It's the MK Laturneau audience they are after.

The woman in the ad wasn't a public school teacher, was she?

I think both ads are inappropriate. Yet another reason we don't have TV.

I hope to one day have problems as small and meaningless as you do. Maybe then I'll worry about things like a Dr Pepper commercial like this.

I saw that ad and it hit me as "creepy". The ad people really need to take a look at the election results. The nation, as a whole, isn't interested in seedy innuendo during family t.v. viewing.

The way the media has sympathetically portrayed Mary Kay LaTourneau, this commercials message doesn't surprise me at all.

Had a 30 something MALE teacher did the same thing with a 12 year-old girl, he would have (and should have) been burned at the stake.

But if a woman uses an immature, adolescent male for sex, most folks don't see it as much of a crime.

Dr. Pepper commercials are always stupid.

Oh, not the ones with the country stars! (OK, maybe they are, but I like lookin' at the male country singers in them!)
