ARchy, don't I remember you writing a personal post explaining the situation in South or Latin America? Do you have that URL?

Why doesn't somebody just kill Chavez?

I would, but I've got a couple of other taskers I'm working right now...and I have Spring Break plans already.

I want to agree with the author of this commentary. But I believe that Hugo Chavez is getting direct input and advice from Fidel's people in Cuba. The combination of drug cartels operating in Panama, Peru, Colombia and Bolivia, and excess oil profits in Venezuela, makes revolution and/ or full scale war a genuine possibility. Panama has how many banks now laundering drug money -- is it 50 or 60 or more? China is also a major player in the entire region supplying arms to revolutionaries and jet fighters to dictators.

Ping - I'm supposed to go to Caracas this summer for a conference. Might re-think that now.

Call me a cold-blooded afficionado of Realpolitik with a Machiavellian streak, but I say we fan the flames of war and chaos, while moving our law enforcement assets to blockade/secure our borders against the inevitable influx of refugees.

Send no American peackeepers, no food relief, nothing.

Why? Because a ruinous, fratricidal war in Latin America over ideology would, given a sufficient level of ruthlessness, ferocity, and inhumanity, eventually show the survivors, in no uncertain terms, the folly and idiocy of adhering to aggressive, fanatical ideologies.

It worked with the Japanese and the Germans after WW2, as well as with the French after the Napoleonic Wars, and it will work with these so-called "Bolivarians" when their cities and farms have been turned to ashes.
