LOS ANGELES, Jan 25 (Reuters) - Michael Moore's attempt to turn voters against U.S. President George W. Bush failed and on Tuesday he lost his gamble as well for a coveted best-picture Oscar nomination for his incendiary documentary "Fahrenheit 9/11."
The omission from the coveted category marks a major misfire for the liberal firebrand who withdrew his anti-Bush polemic from contention in the documentary category, which he won two years ago with "Bowling for Columbine," in order to focus on the big prize. No documentary has ever won the best picture Oscar.
Conservative filmmaker Mel Gibson, who performed a miracle by turning an Aramaic-speaking Jesus into a worldwide box office star with "The Passion of the Christ," also was shut out of the major award categories.
The Biblical saga generated zero buzz among Oscar prognosticators, and Gibson declined to campaign for the film he directed and funded with his own money after all the studios passed. It did, however, land three minor Oscar nominations for makeup, cinematography and score.
Earlier this month, "Passion" won a lowly People's Choice Award for best film drama to go with the two Oscars Gibson won in 1996 for producing and directing "Braveheart."

This time he decided to eschew all the promotional work, release his film in February instead of November or December, and then avoid doing any promotional work to get nominations.
Fine, he doesn't want to play the game the way everyone else does, then he has to live with the results.

Fear not, the Golden Globes Awards viewership dropped 40% from last year's viewers. I suspect the Academy Awards will drop again this year. Millions of folks saw "The Passion of the Christ" and are ticked off that Mel Gibson and the movie has been snubbed by the Academy. Hollywood is slowly getting the message, maybe? Michael Moore was dropped like the bad habit he is. I suspect a few years from now he'll be hanging around McDonald's stuffing his ugly pie hole with cheeseburgers and fries. Or maybe better yet, he'll become Hillary Clinton's campaign manager along with Barbara "treason/traitor" Boxer!!!
I think Mel Gibson cares about the Oscars about as much as most of us do.
I don't think The Passion was meant to be in contention as if it was another Hollywood picture. It was meant for something far greater. Snubbing it is the treatment it deserves. It is far too great for that bunch.
Certainly anyone who's a major fan of that shining example of humility and good taste: Mr. Chris Rock, our host for the evening!
The Passion wasn't snubbed by the Oscars, it didn't even qualify for best picture because it is in Aramaic.
Mel doesn't see it as a big deal. He didn't campaign for it and he frankly doesn't care.
If Mel doesn't care why should anyone else? Why do movie goers need an Oscar on the film they like to validate their film?

Can't believe that some enterprising Network would not have an awards show the same evening. For instance, the People's Choice award, that would give Mel Gibson his just dues.....a bigger and better trophy for Mel from the American People! Total conservative lineup with conservative entertainers and nominees. We know they're out there.
It's the other way around. Gibson snubbed the Oscars.
And I sure would want my taxes in order for the next 4 years at least if I was him ;-)

That would be VERY close to the truth, so I guess thats out of the question for Rooters.
I think that Mel Gibson sincerely measures the value of his movie in the hearts it has changed, not the accolades it might or might not win from those with whom he has little in common. This movie was a spiritual journey for him and he has steadfastly held to that purpose by all appearances.
Maybe the Oscars should join forces with the Nobel Peace Prize gaggle and they could issue a combo Oscar Peace Prize, or another with the Lenin prize as a super house combo without anchovies.

Mel reminds me somewhat of President Bush.
President Bush (according to recent Time article, and I'm paraphrasing) measures whether or not he is on track by listening to the screeching and whining from the left.
I think Mel Gibson considers it a sign that he is "ok" when he is snubbed by the Hollywood crowd.
It is a great tracking device...the degree of disdain your "enemy" has for you.
