His eyes welling with tears, Sacramento Fire Chief Julius "Joe" Cherry vowed Tuesday to return his scandal-ridden department to respectability even as Mayor Heather Fargo and two City Council members said that four firefighters should be fired if sex allegations against them are true.
The political leaders warned that they would be closely watching Cherry and City Manager Bob Thomas to ensure that the proper discipline is meted out in this latest department scandal.
Cherry revealed Monday that he had launched an investigation into charges that the four firefighters - three men and a woman - had engaged in group sex in their Hollywood Park station house.
"This will be the real test," said Councilman Steve Cohn about Cherry and Thomas' handling of the allegations. "Obviously the message is not yet strong enough - we will not tolerate inappropriate behavior." When Fargo was asked Tuesday if she believed Cherry was capable of turning around the troubled department, she replied: "He'd better."
Cherry said he's required by law to fairly investigate the allegations and could not say what discipline would be forthcoming. His voice shaking with emotion during in an interview at The Bee, Cherry said that he loves the department, and although he cannot change the culture alone, he believes progress is being made. "Thomas said he has the "ultimate confidence" in Cherry's ability to lead the organization and to make appropriate discipline decisions.
The department's rules don't specifically prohibit sexual activity on the job, but they do say firefighters are expected to "be governed by the ordinary and reasonable rules of behavior observed by law-abiding and self-respecting citizens. No member shall commit any act tending to bring discredit upon the Department or its members."

I guess that explains the shortage of sex in my life - I only work about 6 hours a day. Maybe if I started getting up earlier?

In the late 1970s there was a city in Massachusetts that had Police arrest some workers at the DPW Garage who were running a sports betting ring (not just for their co-workers) while on the job. The Police got some convictions and some workers were fired, but ended up getting their jobs back after the union filed a grievance that running a gambling ring from the work place was not expressly prohibited in the personnel manual or the city bylaws. The state Civil Service review board decided in favor of the workers. The city changed their rules shortly thereafter.
Women dont belong in the Fire Department any more than they do in a Combat Military unit.
Even the liberal SacBee called foul! So they rescheduled and made his appearance mandatory. Now he says he is tired of all these accusations. They are far beyond accusations. The state board has found that he created an atmosphere among his employees that was harassing and non-productive. Also, a little thing about employing the son of his largest campaign donor in a high-paying, do-nothing position.
Get this guy out and it is on the the democratic leader in the legislature, who had his house raided by the FBI and also his son's house. Gosh, we miss Davis ...

Sadly, some Sacramento firefighters apparently failed to get the message last summer. Several firefighters were fired - others suspended - when they were caught attending the Porn Star Costume Ball while on duty on July 2 and using city fire engines to give joy rides to women. Two were accused of sexual assault, but the district attorney's office said it found insufficient evidence to file criminal charges. In other incidents, firefighters were caught drinking on the job and picking up women in bars while on duty.

. . . After reviewing the [earlier] cases and concluding that all of them would not survive a civil service challenge, five terminations were reduced to suspensions.
That must not happen this time. Sex on the job should be a firing offense, and if the firefighters accused are found to have engaged in such conduct, this time the firings should stick. [END; emphasis added]

Your editorial of January 26, 2005 about the firefighter sex charges said that "sex on the job should be a firing offense." However, they had sex instead of playing cards. There is no indication that it interfered with their jobs.Firefighters go into harm's way for all of us. Why should they be held to a higher standard than was applied to Bill Clinton, a President who had "sex on the job" in the Oval Office and then, unlike the firefighters, lied about it under oath, which lies got him disbarred? He was never fired and those who tried to get him fired were called the "sex police."
Is your paper reconsidering its hard-core defense of the first elected President who was impeached?

Would you or someone that you know be willing to send a letter along the lines suggested in my post 14? The hypocracy is mind-boggling and someone should call attention to it.
I'd do it myself, but I think that they're much less likely to publish such a letter from someone just outside DC as I am.
My letter assumes that the SacBee was an ardent defender of Clinton, but I think that's a pretty safe assumption. Maybe you know for sure?
Incidentally, I would change the last sentence of the first paragraph in the proposed letter to the editor to say: "There is no indication that their private sex lives interfered with their jobs." This being a refrain of the Clinton defenders that sex on the job with a subordinate was his "private sex live."
According to local radio, one person would 'watch' to see if the 'coast was clear', while the others (both males married, female unmarried) carried on their tryst.
Got nothing against having sex, but if it means my couch, fully engulfed, becomes a whole house fire while this foursome is half-way into their slickers, then yes, there is a problem. It's called unprofessional conduct and in football, carries a 15yd. penalty, if not ejection from the game.
Not to mention, you may place me on the national 'do not resusitate' list if I'm ever short of breath and it means using mouth-to-mouth.
