DENVER - A Denver police sergeant is under investigation for reportedly telling a young woman he'd arrest her if she didn't remove a bumper sticker that had a profanity directed at President Bush.
Shasta Bates, 26, says Denver Police Sgt. Michael Karasek approached her in a Denver shopping mall Monday and said that a bumper sticker on her truck, which includes the F-word and the surname of our president, had to be removed. While the message may be offensive to some, it's not illegal.
"He said that I needed to remove my stickers before I left, and that if I didn't and I showed up here again, and he saw me, he was going to arrest me," said Bates.
"He said my First Amendment (right) wasn't covered under profanity displayed on my truck," said Bates.
But Denver's city attorney has said he's never heard of the law that the sergeant was reportedly enforcing. So far, the Denver Police Department is only confirming that an investigation is underway.
But a federal court won't allow South Carolina to have a pro life license plate. We indeed live in sick times.
There's two types of cops in the world --Those who've been caught in their lies and those who have yet to be caught.
This gal was interviewed on the radio here. Now, whether the officer was in the right, I don't know. The defense the gal made was that the bumper sticker wasn't political and she didn't think people would take it that way.
Turns out she has another bumper sticker reading "I might be dating your daughter".
Interesting to say the least.
I'd be curious to know if there is indeed a law preventing profanity in the public arena or not. I truly hope there is and that the police officer is exonerated.

Unless my eyes mislead me Shasta Bates is a lesbian.
I bet the whole thing is made up BS.
She should get counseling for her mental illness.
Poor taste (not to mention stupid), but illegal?
At least, that is the BS I've been told right here on FR...
I saw that on the local news. The F*** BUSH was blurred but right under it was a sticker that said:
Sick puppy...
I saw a lot of those around here(Northern CO) during the campaign and just before the election. I hope I don't get in trouble for this, the stickers say
BUCK FUSH. Totally childish and not even funny in my opinion.
What a novel way of makeing a political statement by the reporter..
"He said my First Amendment (right) wasn't covered under profanity displayed on my truck," said Bates.
The police officer was wrong and the woman has a right to express her obscenity on her bumper. There have been numerous court cases about this type of thing and the constitution does protect offensive speech.
Everything one has a right to do is not best to be done.-Benjamin Franklin
Profanity allowed everywhere and anywhere if it's against conservative values.
I should have put under the article - the reason the cop became involved is because a shopper complained to the police officer that the sticker was offensive

Thanks for the quote. It reflects what my husband and I always say about free speech...Just because you CAN say something, doesn't mean you SHOULD. Some things are still just wrong.
I'm just sick of it! It's in my face now and I'm made out to be the old-fashioned prude!

What a Crock
I don't think it's any worse that "S##T Happens" or those pics of little boys peeing on a Nascar Number...or whatever. It's all offensive and adding to the vulgarity of our society. People don't even make a pretense of an apology anymore with the old "excuse my French" when they curse in public.
And I think the feminist movement brought about a lot of it.
I am with the cop on this one.
It's just a word. The word "Democrat" is more of a cuss word to me.
No support the troops bumper stickers allowed. No license plates supporting pro life, no american flags on police officer uniforms or on police cruisers.......
Somewhere in Texas a village is missing it's idiot.
My husband asked the guy if he was the one that was missing!!!!
The guy was not amused!!!!! LOL.....
Denver and Boulder are far far left kookburgers.....but for the most part the rest of the state is normally sane!!!!
But the "right" to use the F word against the President for all to see THAT'S okay!
Stunning in the extreme!!
Don't know the scripture, but the Bible says Woe to those who call evil good and good evil.

It ain't BS, DC. But F*** BUSH fits the political climate, so the cop was out of line.
The same bumper sticker that the paper could not show because it was obscene.
Then they need to secede from the Union. US Constitution claims it is the "Supreme Law of the Land". If Denver doesn't like it, there is a mechanism for them to withdraw. It's a bit broken, due to the Civil War, but times are different. They might just succeed in seceding.
The cop probably made a joke and the lesbo went ballistic.
A lady at work had that posted on the wall by her desk. One day I told her I agreed, how could anyone be stupid enough to vote for Shiela Jackson-Lee? She almost spit.... {:0)
cop was out of line. Wrong! He was doing his duty. A citizen called in a complaint, the officer responded, suspect in question was violating the law, officer gave warning to suspect.
She could have been arrested for this!
Where I live there are laws against using profanity on public highways. I know someone who was charged with it. It eventually was dropped but the law is on the books.
I agree with your statement. Communities have a right to establish laws against obscenities and disorderly conduct. Families should be able to bring their children up in a decent environment. I think the young woman can make a statement that let's us know her views on President Bush without using profane language. The officer responded appropriately, good for him.
Suits me, the place is a cesspool. I won't go there or patronize any buisness there. I tell merchents that, I won't pay taxes to support that town. Too bad I have to miss the Sportsmans Exposition again, though.
some bumbers just beg to be chained to telephone poles
also bumpers
Get it?
Sad thing is according to libs... it took that village to raise her! LOL!!!
BTW, according to the city attorny, she violated no law and could not be lawfully arrested. The officer will be made to appologize. Sucks, but then it IS Denver.
A deciple of Patsy Schroeder no doubt>
Well the expo is once a year to meet outfitters, arrange hunting and fishing trips, see the lates hunting and fishing gear and such. Cool show, but I ain't going.
I would throw her in jail for language. I would throw her in for hating-America.
Were the cops that died at the world trade center on September 11th, 2001 those who've been caught in their lies or those who have yet to be caught? How about all the other cops across our nation who had made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the public? Are they officers who've been caught in their lies or those who yet to be caught? The next time you need help from a police officer why don't you instead call the woman in the car that has the F*** Bush bumper sticker.
If you say her name five times fast, its a vulgar word... MissShastaBates MissShastaBates MissShastaBates MissShastaBates MissShastaBates
So if I go up to a demonrat mayor and say "F**k you you commie rat bastard!" They can't arrest me? Yeah right.
Send me $10,000 for up front bail money, then I'll try that experiment.
Sheila Jackson Lee was voted the most stupid politician in an anonymous poll a few years ago.
I believe Patrick Kennedy ws the male counterpart.
You are right - Drive around Denver / Boulder and you see more Kerry signs - Everywhere else is Bush Country
Proud to be a redstater
