I say it's more about home-schooling turning out more Spelling B winners than public schools. Can you spell: HUMILIATION.

I agree. Schools are under a lot of pressure now because of NCLB. Unfortunately, a lot of the pressure is directed at the kids. It's unnecessary and it also hurts kids at the higher end of the spectrum because all the resources are going to the lower end. Well, this is the result of 30 years or so of fads and silliness. The chickens have come home to roost, and they've landed with a thud right on top of the little red schoolhouse.

If I had a child in a public school which was struggling with NCLB issues, I'd pull him out.

"Linda Newman, assistant superintendent of schools in Lincoln, R.I., and an overpaid, drooling idiot, said it's her understanding that..."

Hope you don't mind my correction.

There have been stories of principals thwarting bright students from transferring from marginally performing schools to say, science magnet schools, because that principal needs that kid to take that test in his home school.

"Across the country there has been no set pattern but there has been an underlying ideology aimed at creating values foreign to our culture and to our way of life. The examples are too numerous for these pages but there may be room for a few. There are schools which have eliminated the Valedictorians and the Salutatorians at graduation since their ability to excel would most assuredly destroy the self-esteem of their peers. Classrooms have indicated that a child has given the correct answer if responding that 2 + 2 equals 5..."

You got it!! The parents MUST stand together to get this trash out of the schools. We have tolerated enough of this Homosexual crap in our schools and we the Parents, the Taxpayers want it out.

If they start to take it to the Liberal judges, then recall the judges, the schoolboard, representatives, whoever is going to try to defend this Homosexual Corruption of the children.

No COMPROMISE!!! That the weak point, give them an inch they will take a mile, NO COMPROMISE!!

I suspect this is all part of a nefarious plot to leave no liberal behind. Can you see it? We can't declare that Bush won the election because it violates the principle of leave no liberal behind!

"It should be a top priority of conservatives to break the teachers' unions."

I can't think of a better way to improve the schools overnight! It's just too bad the R's in office are too busy passing legislation such as the "No Child Left Behind" act - which is obviously only further confusing these administrators and teachers.

BTW: I was once in a spelling bee for my middle school when I was in 6th grade. It was all 3 grades together in the bee. I made it all the way till I was one of 4 or 5 left... I've never spelled the word cemetery wrong again in my life!(o;

LOL - See Post #92 - it was C-E-M-E-T-E-R-Y for me! After the spelling bee was over the librarian told me the following mnemonic: All e's in cemetery because you're buried in the earth.

Here's another article that speaks to the same theme -

Is High Self-Esteem Bad for You?

EXCERPT FROM ARTICLE:
But it is in America's teachers colleges and public schools that the movement for unconditional self-esteem has found its true home. Today's educational practices encourage children to think of themselves as special regardless of what they do; and the practices encourage teachers to overpraise students' work and shield them from criticism. Only on the assumption that self-esteem must not be contingent on thought and action could such practices be seen as promoting it.

This use of self-esteem to motivate "affective education" is driven by the anticognitive culture of colleges of education. When it comes to these anticognitive practices in the schools, we must of course agree with the critics of the self-esteem movement. Sullivan and D'Souza and Baumeister and Emler are right to object that parents and teachers should not be ladling out indiscriminate praise to children. But then no one with an adequate understanding of self-esteem would endorse such practices.
----------------------------------------------------------

[Perhaps the last line of that excerpt would be of particular effectiveness for those wishing to write to the administrator in RI? (o;]

Liberal gobbledygook. Liberals hate competition and success. No we must not let a child succeed so other children can be inspired to do better than they are. See - they look at every one has not being able to do good enough. That's why we must settle for mediocrity rather than excellence. Heaven forbid a child actually wins a spelling bee contest. It might be leaving other children behind - and we're not allowed to. >sarcasm
