Check your Social Security Name (Vanity in service of old married ladies living in Texas)

I turn 49 next month. So my Driver's license needs to be renewed. I went early - well, I had a big meeting in Austin and the makeup worked and it was a cold day and the black turtleneck would look great for the next 10 years,

I took my 2 forms of ID, my car insurance, my 31 year old Social Security Card, and gave the little red light my thumbprints and the lady my check.

Two weeks later, I got my new license (did I mention that the makeup and turtleneck were working - first good picture in years and it's laminated, too!) and a second envelope from the State of Texas.

It seems that they ran my name through Social Security and my name is wrong somewhere. My license is "alarmed" until I go down to DPS with that letter and 5 or 6 forms of ID.

I went to the DPS, all loaded with ID. I told the lady that I new it wasn't her fault, but I needed to know who to complain to, since the SS number is not a national ID.

She informed me that "That was repealed in 1976." The State of Texas runs everyone through SS "within 5 days" since the Patriot Act.

She then informed me that even though the letter said to come to DPS, now I had to go to the Social Security office because I had changed my name. I explained that I have been married 31 years, have not changed my name in all that time. Nothing has changed since the last time I renewed my license. She insisted that my SS card said one thing and that if I insisted on using the name on my driver's license, my marriage license, my voter's registrations, Passport, and medical license I would have to get my name changed at SS. Because someone somewhere does not want people to use more than one name at a time.

I had to go 20 miles away, to another county, to the SS office. And then I would have to get a new card and come back to see her.

I asked what would happen if a policeman stopped me while my license is "alarmed." She said "it's not legally binding, no one will cite you."

It seems that when all the cards were entered into the computer, no one entered my name change.

She did give great directions to the SS office.

I guess I'm legal now. I have a letter that says I've changed my name.

Sorry for the redundancy and spelling, I hit the wrong button. Maybe I shouldn't be so hard on the computer people.

The young man at the SS said he'd only seen a similar case once before - And it was another old card like mine.

Thanks, Kid.

Oh, my. I still have my original ss card, and it's in my maiden name. Just celebrated my 30th anniversary, as well.

A lesson the longtime married ladies (among other lessons) can teach the young married ladies. Change the name on your docs.!

Yep, I guess I need to take care of this and then remind my daughter and daughter-in-law, as well.

I've never heard of a problem with a drivers license, but I did have a problem with the IRS. No refund until all the names matched.

You might want to go get it fixed. They used my passport and marriage license and fixed everything in 10 minutes (if you don't count the time in line at DPS and driving to Timbuktu and back.)

Hi, hocndoc. When I saw your title about "old Texas ladies" I had to read your story. We met last year when Jim Rob was in Plano. If you wouldn't have had to drive 'hitter and yon', it would be almost funny.

Husband had to have his SS card changed, it was a shorten version of his name and it cause a lot of problems when he went to get disability from SS as all of his identification was in his full name. We got all the forms filled out and had a new card in a week.

File for S/S under both names, if as usual the Government will mess up, and you will get 2 S/S Checks. That will teach them to fool around with you.

You're lucky. Did you see the ost here the other day about a lady whe aplied for a job at Target and they refused her because she already worked there? Her social security # was being used at 37 OTHER employers too!
Makes me wonder if that is the real reason the gov. doesn't want to stop illegal immigration, or establish privatized accounts, because they're collecting 15% social security taxes on all these people that they don't have to declare in your name! Under the table as it were.
