Knife-Wielding Man Holed Up In (Oregon) Senate Chamber

SALEM, Ore. -- The Oregon Senate was evacuated Monday morning after a man walked in with a knife.

The presiding officer announced about 11:15 a.m. that the armed man was inside the chamber. The room was evacuated and locked down, with a few officers inside but keeping their distance.

He was reportedly holding the knife to his chest and smoking cigarettes. Officers said he was making demands, although they would not specify. Authorities were trying to open a dialogue with the suspect.

The penalty for smoking is SO much more harsh than the charges that may or may not grow out of carrying and brandishing a knife in a threatening manner. After all, maybe he only wanted to sit there and whittle out some novelties or art work.
